Which diesel to use for best performance

I'd like to hear opinions on fuel, the reason i ask is i am joining the darkside from a petrol car. The petrol was only ever ran on optimax (grey import WRX) and its been proven time and again optimax (now superseaded by v-max) gives high performance cars more power. I didn't think this would be the case with diesel but it looks like this fuel also varies in its performance. so do i stick with shell or go to BPor bung in supermarket grade diesel!? Is their conclusive evidence anywhere about the benifits of different diesel and what are they!? and also what is the differance between diesel and diesel extra, is it the same as un leaded and super ul ie higer octane rating?

To be honest I've not found one yet. I was remapped on cheap diesel, so now when I go and try ultimate diesel, I get worse performance and economy. I've found tesco/JS city diesel, combined with a splash of millers diesel extra gives the best result. :)

My old Ibiza always ran better on BP Ultimate, but not paying for fuel at the time helped a lot too. As said previously, stick a splash of Millers in there and watch it fly. :)

Having done some research i am going to use Shell Diesel Extra. Its cheaper than Ultimate and seems to produce similar results. So having spent the last two and a half years buying optimax from shell looks like i'll spend the next few years giving shell my custom.

I changed from tesco's to texaco fuel about 2 months ago. With mine being slightly fettled with, it used to smoke a bit under load etc, now with the texaco fuel in it, the soot has been reduced dramatically, and you get a slight puff of smoke whilst changing gear. The car also feels alot more smoother and slightly quicker and responsive. Minxycov also tried texaco in her 180 bhp petrol mk4 cupra, and she also noticed the difference with texaco. Give it a shot mate, it may also make you notice the difference.

If you are lucky enough to be able to get it in your area, Shell Diesel Extra is the one to go for. Sadly it's not available here in the South West and my emails to Shell asking when have yet to get a response!

I used Shell for ages but then tried Esso. Found that to be perkier to be honest. No better economy but the throttle response was better, slightly more torque.

Best thing to do is to remap the car. More power, more torque and more economy as I have just found out.

I have never noticed a performance difference between any diesels via my seat or a dyno. I do agree on the soot comments though. Supermarket fuel does tend to smoke heavily from the tailpipe whereas the BP and Shell stuff stays cleaner. Mind you I still use the cheapest I can find as I get through 2 tanks a week at the minute and I couldnt really care if the bloke behind cant see much:)
