wrong oil in my PD 150????

While browsing the site I see the recomended oil for pd engines is vw 505 01 .. problem is I have vw 505 00 in. (thats what i get for listening to the guy in the auto factors) . I only changed it 2 weeks ago, but the oil used on the previous change was the same... im just wondering am i doing dammage by using the vw 505 00, what is the difference between 505 00 and 505 01??

should i take it out ??

Definately. There's the chance of increased wear on the cam lobes, etc with the wrong type of oil. Check the TDI sections stickies for more detailed reasons...

You absolutely 100% need 505.01.

This spec oil has a special anti-scuffing additive for additional protection of the camshaft lobes which actuate the valves and injectors.

These operate under such extreme loadings that the oil film can be broken down by the pressure, allowing metal / metal contact.

The additive helps prevent this.

Get the guy to change to 505.01 / 506.01 (long life) right away. He's wrong, end of story.

It's impossible to say without removing the cam cover if any damage has already been done to the cam lobes or followers, I'm afraid.

Yes - Go down the auto factors and give the bloke a slap. If you're lucky, they'll be a Millers oil stockist. If so, get a 5 litre pot of Millers XFE-PD which is 505.01 compliant and get it in your car asap. I doubt there is "serious" damage being done by running on 505.00, but it's not ideal and should be changed.

Millers XFE-PD should be about £25 for a 5 litre pot. This is a bargain compared to what the dealers charge. And I think the PDs need good oil for some reason - Might be to do with the charge pressures in the injectors, and the camshaft, etc that makes them work.

halfords have a 5L can with vw spec 505 01 oil.
anybody use or is it muck?? if it has the vw spec it must be ok??? its only 39.99 euro castrol is 49.99 for 4l and 19.99 for the extra 1l needed

i hope there is no dammage been running the 505 00 for about 6-8 k miles now. ... 6k on last change and about 2k since.

Fuchs Titan Supersyn VW 505.01 - 5w 40 weight oil is on special offer at my suppliers, costs £54 for 2 x 4ltr cartons, with free delivery. It'll cost you a little bit more than that though unless you can get membership for their discount scheme.

Ah, just seen that you're in Dublin, so delivery may be an issue.

Hmm, what with various posts recently about severe cam/tappet wear on PD150s that have been fully serviced with the correct oil, I'd be a bit concerned if you've been running on the wrong oil for that many miles.

is it a big job to take off the cam cover and have a look?? i might for peace of mind...

it was vw 505 00, but it was 10w 40 synthetic oil not the mineral oil, so im hoping there shouldn't be much / any dammage. If i was running mineral oil (ie 15w 40) then I would be very concerned.

Its not a big job to get it off but clearance at the back is a bit tight
