hi there I've not currently had a chance to look. I have been trying to access it via my iphone but it does not support the format. I will get my laptop fired up tonight and have a look. I'm sure there will be info there that I will need. thanks

I think Elsawin is the only source of this information. The Haynes Golf Mk.4 manuals wimp out on gearboxes, reckoning they are too difficult for the DIY mechanic.

The VAG self-study program is interesting but contains no maintenance info.

You could try posting on VWVortex, it's a US forum but there are a lot of very knowledgeable people on there, I've sometimes had better results asking more obscure questions (no offence!) on there than on here. Reasonable chance someone will have a Bentley manual for a car with the same gearbox and look it up for you. Also worth searching there, lots of good historical info.

Couldn't see much else regarding shims in the two mins I had to check lol :)

thanks kindly. do you know if the bearing clearences are the same on all 02m gearboxes. I have access to the manual for the old Octavia which has 02m gearbox and could use that as a guide?

Checked a couple of gearboxes and the shims list as the same as those above - I can't see why the clearances would be any different between the 02M boxes, basically the same with a couple of different F/D ratios.

You need a manual with the adjustment procedure in it. The input shaft should have a clearance, but the layshafts are under compression.
