Wobbly steering wheel........

I had some new 17" wheels fitted a few weeks ago and the wheels were balanced. When driving home I noticed that the steering wheel was wobbling like mad when i was booting it but seemed to get less when i was just cruising. Between 50+mph it gets very bad and I have asked the garage and they said its because I have 5mm spacers on the front and it will be fine.

Is that correct or should I be worrying because if i'm honest when i'm booting it at like 60mph (or more on private land :D) it dont feel very safe....... comments would be appreciated.

even with spacers it should stay true of they are straight and balanced right

when you say like MAD wot sort of degrees cos 17" will cause more torquesteer but at 50+ should be fine i'd have thought

summats not right for sure

I had them balanced twice since and that hasn't helped. When i say like mad i mean my whole arm shakes. I think i will take it somewhere else and see if its tracking or something else. Shouldn't be anything major though should it?

Yeah ive got sort of the same with mine, just fitted 17" superleggeras and a hell of a lot more torque steer unsure what tyre pressure to set them at so ive just set them to standard ones. I know that they are not bent/buckled and all balanced correctly because i did them myself, was just thinking that it might be down to the wheels being alot lighter than the standard ones and 17" rims.

I know you said you've had them balanced twice since, was that all at the same garage, if so try somewhere else, i had the very same thing as you, wobbling like buggery when booting it and hard breaking but ok cruising (well alot better anyway!).
I took it to a different garage and they re-balanced the wheels and found my front left off by 50 grams. It's fine now.

Cheers

I do, but mine seem ok, but then i do my best to make sure they are as centred as possible when i need to remove and refit the wheels.

Thats what i'm wondering if it is the problem that mike is having.

I think i got spigot rings and spacers on, they are universal spacers so that may be the problem. I am going to a different garage tomorrow to see if they can balance them and sort the problem, if not i mite have to get rid and run my standards again because it aint nice to drive as it is.

Cheers for all the help so far though seems that I aint the only one with this problem.
