Why can't the solution to the rear knocking be found?

I am getting sick to death of my car producing knocks from the rear end when going over bumps. I have checked the seats, behind the trim in the boot lid, spare wheel etc.

I know the polo, and fabia share the same issue, so why is it, no-one can find the solution?

Also when it is cold and damp, the suspension squeaks from the rear, another common fault.

BTW great engine is the 130TDI, however let down by the **** it is bolted into, soon as I have enough pennies will be changing.

hell
Have you changed the exhaust, or had the car lowered?
Its quite a common issue to have exhausts knocking, maybe check or change your rubbers.

I found the knock on the rear of my car was a piece of box section that the last but one exhaust mount was mounted too.

5 minutes with a cold chisel and a lump hammer, problem solved. The seat clearances seem to be very small and something as simple as a worn exhaust hanger can allow it too move and knock badly.

Knocking noises

The missus has a Mk4 Beeza which is all good at the moment - I on the other hand have a Polo Tdi (yeah shout... its still VAG though) and I have the same strange hard to find knocking noises. Its been suggested that the bushes are a prone to fail item although I think my rear shocks are leaking a little too. Symptoms are knocking noises from no easily identifiable location, usually at low speed whilst menouvering, not on full lock though... can see it being a garage job though...

I seem to remember the knocking at the rear could be cured by fitting revised top rear suspension mounts ?

Getting the rear struts out is a very easy DIY job too.

thanks for the replies and help. The car is neither lowered or had an aftermarket exhaust on, its totally stock.

I will look into the exhaust and see if it is banging on its mounts, if it isn't I will replace the shock top mounts and see how that goes.

thanks again

There is a special dial that stops the rattling, it on the front of the dash board call the volume dial. :) Mine does the same but I have an aftermarket exhaust, are powerflex high performance exhaust mounts are better than the original ones from a cupra?

Sometimes I like to drive round in peace and quiet, looking at changing my car for a Honda Accord 2.2 I-CTDI, had Honda's in the past and never had an ounce of trouble, apart from refuelling, consumables and servicing. I shouldn't need to be replacing exhaust rubbers, shock top mounts at 21K. Very poor indeed. Its already had a new front spring, and a rear damper, 4 new brake disks and pads.
