Anyone know what this suggest? I have white gunk on my oil cap

The only thing that comes to mind is a dodgy thermostat cause the car never reaches temperature anymore only gets to a 1/4 on the guage when it use to be 1/2.

Could this be causing the oil not to reach temperature causing the gunk?

Check the oil levels as well, if you've run the oil low and take the engine to high revs frequently then you can get the gunk on the oil cap. Had the gunk problem on my last car which I didn't check the oil levels on regulary and gave a bit of a thrashing.

If the car isn't getting up to temperature along with the current cold wet weather you just get a bit of condensation in the engine. Same as doing short journies. If you sort out the temperature problem the gunk should disappear. If it doesn't then start to worry.

Had the exact same thing on my old 1.4 engine flush and an oil change fixed it, just due to so many 4 mile journeys to work that a bit of condensation build up occured. I wouldnt worry my mums 1.4 polo has had it for 4 years now :)

Neh the oils looks fine scotty.

Its always had it on the cap but seems to be getting worse. Must be the time of year cause its cold and wet. And neveres reach full operating temp

Going to test the water temp in the next few days. Accord to the sevice manual its meant to be between 84 - 98c

Jeez that is an alarming picture - where the **ck did you get that carpet?

As per the suggestions - most likely to be your "underheating" issue.

I would have said if its in the oil cap, check the dipstick and if its on that too then it might be the head gasket.
