Whining Gearbox

Hi - I have had my 55 plate FR+ 150 for around 12 weeks which has covered around 9600ish miles - but to my dismay, I have been in the dealership twice for a replacement gearbox - failed diff bearings and agian for the same complaint - which is - lifting off the gas pedal between 30 - 40mph produces a wobbling, high pitched whining noise??? The dealership on my second visit said that the noise is normal, they have other FR+'s and Cupra's that make this noise - what can be done? anybody else had this issue? - thanx :(

Morning,

I just had the box replaced on my LCR, its only done 17k. I thought the noise was a bearing. I've since got it back and the noise is still there, i'm now convinced I still have a drivers side front bearing issue. But i'll let you know

Hi - thanx for the reply - having to look for a third dealership to review my problem as I have lost any confidence in the first two! A previous thread spoke about a "wer wer wer wering" noise which is exactly the same as mine - almost a warped disc/sticking caliper noise? - and when I depress the clutch in gear the noise eases but then returns fully when the clutch is fully engaged!! - I would be pleased to hear from you if you get yours fixed - thanx again

Have the same problem here on an 05 plate FR 150 with 15k on the clock - makes a constant whine at lower speeds in all the higher gears... I was starting to wonder if it's going wrong, so kinda glad some others are doing it too! I will get the guys to check it out when its serviced next if it's not got any worse before then.

Try getting the oil changed with some quality stuff. IIRC some cars from the factory got the wrong grade of oil.

I'm popping over to Westerham Seat on sat and I will take the technician out for a drive and personally point out the noise! I'll let you guys know the result, I was only meant to be getting a new bosch temp sensor!!

Update!!

Right, drove over to Westerham Seat and they swapped over my temp sensor in a matter of mins, then the technician took the car out for a drive, noted the noises and ran diagnostics. They put the up on the ramps fitted some sensors and tested it again.

Initially they thought it could still be the gear box, but got the car up to speed, took it out of gear and cut the engine. Noise continued, obviosly not the gear box, they have booked it in for next sat morning to replace my wheel bearings.

Hopefully problem solved!:D

Cheers again to the guys at Westerham Seat, they really do look after you and try everything to help. Highly Recommended

Well, thanx for all the replies - still getting the noise and have had a call from the original supplying dealership - they say that some Leon's suffer from "fluid flywheel"? which occurs when the clutch and flywheel seperate after taking your foot off the gas pedal? - apparently the flywheel can move upto an inch or so because the clutch plates have lost there proper function???? They did however say that the Westerham dealership were very good and I should take it there before my long drive to Bournemouth! - I shall let you know....

I know this is 2 year old thread and one of many but anyone else still suffering the gearbox wine?

Our 2005 leon TDI 130 had a slight whinning when new on the overrun as you lift off the throttle in gear most noticable now in 4th gear.

But due to been a second car until now and me not using it much and im now using it i notice its much louder than it was when the car was new.

Its only done 12K and has full service history.

Was the cause ever found? was it the diff? or just a characteristic of the 6speed box?

Hi Geoff.
I had this problem with my 04 LCR.
Cost me £1k for a new set of gearbox bearings.
Porblem came back within a year and this time was diagnosed as a "cir-clip" ?? in the gearbox which had become bent.
Fixed under the warrantee for the bearing fix.
Told it was my agressive changing down through the gears.......

Thanks for the reply Steve,
I think my first port of call is replace the gearbox oil and see if that makes any difference.
So looks like its barrings related, it does sound like that i must admit.

gear oil

I have a leon fr180 on a 05 66000 miles i have whine from my gearbox in 3rd and 4th i have changed the gear oil with genuine seat stuff but made no difference so iam going to try either the lucas oil stabiliser or the redline mt 90 gear oil which looking at older posts has good reviews:whistle:
