ill have a look tomorrow then.... i have noticed a slight crackiling at the back of the engine when been under hard use after a drive, kinda like burning smell aswell, nowt to drastic but have noticed this....

Have you replaced that hose at all? They are prone to failing apparently. I replaced mine a few months before i got this noise (which i thought was the turbo on it's way out at the time = alot of worying).
I took off the heat proof stuff and saw the jubilee loose on the hose, so i just took it off and refitted the hose with a new jubilee and it's been running like a dream.

Could it be a driveshaft? that would make a louder noise as you reached higher revs and make no noise on idle

Or does it not do it all the time?

yep all the time mate..gets louder through rev range.

well ive so far narrowed it to

1.. clutch bearing
2.. low gearbox oil
3.. cv joint
4.. driveshaft

well getting closer:blink:

If it was release bearing in clutch it would do it on idle and go when you put clutch down?

Thats what it used to do on my old RS turbo so I'm only presuming it would work the same on the leon?

Just hope its not the dif.

well if its the diff im in on tuesday for a quaife so that wouldnt be a problem tbh.....

so cross off the clutch bearings.

any way to test if its the driveshafts? which one, obviously if its the shaft ill change the cv joint which rules out that one aswell.
swayed away from the pulley theory as it doent happen on standstill.

maybe look at this turbo hose richy mentiond, did have a little boost drop.

I'm not really sure how you would test a driveshaft and you'd loose all your oil and possibly damaged gators if you just pulled it out........ but if your having a new dif fitted they will easily be able to have a look for you.

In my opinion a knackered CV joint would clunk at low speeds but not make much noise as speed increased......a bit like a knackered droplink.

Just thinking a bit more on it, I would expect driveshaft/cv joint faults to be vehicle speed related rather than engine speed.

Also have you tested whether it makes any difference pressing the clutch while the noise is happening? obviously the revs will drop off but does that then make your noise drop off.

not noticed mate, when i decellerate, the noise dies off, increasing when accelerating, no noise on standstill in neutral revving.

if i depressed the clutch in motion the noise would go away yes as i would release the accelerator wouldn i, so its entirely rev dependant:)

richybigmans suggestion sounds possible, id be looking more engine related rather than transmission by the sounds.

You could get the front lifted securely on axle stands, switch off the traction control and run it up to sort of speed where it does it usually. Still not a perfect test as it will get the wheels spinning but obviously will not be a real life loading on the wheels, is also not ideal if the car comes off the axle stands. Is a lot safer to do on a ramp in fairness.

checked richys theory.. charge pipe silicone looks okay, the jubilee clip is fine and tight...looked around in the bay, cant see any obvious split pipes, no oil anywhere..

grrrh was hoping it was that one tbh.

checked power steering fluid, just above the minimum line, will top that up, but cant see that making it whine.
