Wheel Bearings - Single/Double?

Hi,
Turns out i need a rear passenger side bearing. I Know people have asked bearing questions before but i couldn't find a specific answer.

So... i have a couple of the Questions (its a mk3 1.8 20VT AYP)

1) Do you replace bearings in pairs or just one by one?

2) Does anyone know when your replacing the rear bearing is it always with a hub assembly or can you get bearing only?

E.C.P has a query on them and VWspares sells them as including hub. Any other sellers?

Whats the right option. I ask because a front bearing (single-no hub) is about £8 and the Rear with hub is about £40-50 each.

Thanks in advance,

Michael

Myki,
Thanks mate, i was looking for your thread - read it a while ago, couldnt find it!
Cheers,
Well if its a single assembly - then thats what i'll get :) - where did you get yours?

Is it just dumb to do both then? - I've just had new brakes all round and refurbished the rear callipers etc - so just want to know its all sound each side (double the price though)!

Thanks

Got mine from ECP mate, cost £53 with the vat, would get you a part number from my reciept but as ive since sold the car i cant lol.

You could do both if you had the cash and time to fit it spare but its not something that needs to be done, it'l just for your own piece of mind really

Yeah i agree it's just me being a perfectionist or is that paranoid!?! lol,

Reading your guide i couldn't see which size/type socket you used to remove the large center hub bolt? Do you know off-the-top-of-your-head - is it a job specific tool or just a certain size torx etc?

thanks again mate - how's the Skyline?

Cheers,

Will read properly next time:p

Skyline Different - Shame - Whys that? Too big!? Too much Power?

Your now thinking...'i wasn't planning on 700+BHP, but its the only way to go now. 350 seems a bit small in this car'!;)

Those kind of problems?
Hope Not.

So....

Got the whole lot stripped down - but just cant 'crack' the Hub Nut.

Im using the correct 30mm Socket and an 18" breaker bar. Have used wd40 and frozen the joint. Still no good!

Any suggestions?

Thanks guys,

It came off about 3mins after i posted - just needed a little time for the wd40 etc to work through and a bit more brute force.

Dont think its even bust - just filled with grime - cleaning it and give it another go and see if it turns smoothly, like it should.

Thanks for the help

Thanks Jay,

All credit to Myki, his original guide is the one to follow. Its not too hard-a-job, just takes a bit of doing, removing the brake assembly etc and replacing etc,

I only replaced the one side - and don't think i'll do the other one until i really have a lot of excess cash and everything else is done first (unless it goes!).

Hope you get on ok mate,

Michael
