well after spending 2 hours getting greased up to hell changing what i thought was a dodgy cv joint, test drive and hey presto........ the noise is still there

so on a right turn, fairly slowly i get a rumbling sound
occasional pops from underneath when sharp turn at crawling speed

what the hell could this be?

i did notice the arb is mightly close to the subframe????????

god help me guys, im getting annoyed, also spotted a dent in the side i never noticed before[:@]

yep bearing is fine, its a proper rumble on lock not a howling/whining

im swaying towards the arb droplinks, as i had the d/shaft off today and didnt seem to be anything wrong with that.

Are the bottom arm bushes ok? and you will be supprised it could possibly be the bearing even though you think its fine.

it only happens on hard right lock at low speeds, checked bearing, no wobble at all..

didnt check the bottom arm bushes.
get a clunking over speed humps also, the arb is very close to the subframe aswell, im led to believe the driveshaft is thicker drivers side than passengers, could this be the reason why its scraping on the shaft when tight cornering?

I had a bearing go that had no other bearing symtoms of a 'standard bearing failing'
The only way to do the radio off, get up to about 60 mph, take car out of gear and weave about the road listening very very closely for noise change. It was only slightly noticeable.
Bearing that was suspected to be the one was changed and noise went

My bet would be wheel bearing too. When the front wheel bearing went on my Ibiza there was no movement when trying to rock the wheel, but the noise grew from a faint whine to a loud rumble over a few weeks. The weaving test tells you which bearing is going - if it rumbling on right turns then it's the nearside bearing.

it wont be the bottom bal joint. can you feel any play in anything?up down/side to side while the car is jacked up. if you have changed the out cv, could be an inner cv or wheel bearing. those are the only rotating parts which follow the movement of the cars motion. . things like bushes/anti roll bar links cause a knocking

take the car out of gear and go round a corner or island at a decent speed. when turning to the left the weight of the car will be on the drivers side. if there is a whine or rumble then wheel bearing. when turning to the right the weight will be on the passenger side and normally any wheel bearing whine will be heard.

I came to the conclusion that front wheel bearings on todays powerful front-wheel-drive cars are very heavily engineered and will wear to the point of being exceptionally noisy without showing any signs of rocking, which was always the old test for a dodgy bearing.

The workshop manual procedure for the job uses a press and a special tool to push the bearing out of the hub. It isn't a job I'm set up for and I gave the Ibiza to the garage (was a dealer, I bought my newer Toledo from them, but has given up the dealership and is now an independent). I think you'd need access to a press at the very least

You've just fitted bigger wheels ,no? When on full right hand lock i bet your rubbing on the "pancake" intercooler pipe. Put full left hand lock on then look down the side of your drivers side wheel and see if theres a clean bit on the flat pipe to the ic .
If so a 10mm spacer will sort that out , But you will have the same problem i had as you have them stupid ( but good looking ) bolts from Inovit and they wont supply longer OR shoter ones so i had to get the FK bolt on type spacer and cut off 8mm ish off each bolt. ( i got 15mm at front and 20mm at back and it made the wheels look even better and has never rubbed once even with 4 fat birds in the back )

if it is im also gonna pop over and give you a big smooch:whistle:

looked at 15mm fronts and 20mm backs pal, make much difference to handling?

i can get the spacers with the longer type wheel bolts also....
