why not look at a diesel mate... i was 17 when i owned a diesel, had a 1.2 mk4 ibiza then moved on to a diesel toledo, so much more modding capabities with a derv... and for 4k youl get yourself a nice 100pd mk4 with enough cash left for the extra insurance (only group 5 i think)... then if you want to mod, exhaust airfilter remap, your sorted

Yeah I would seriously look at a diesel, even a looked after high miler.

A simple remap would gain around 30bhp, which is probably half the bhp of the 1.2 lol

Cheap to run as well.

As for common mods, have a look at the readers rides section, lot of nice cars kicking about there.

You do know any modification you do you'd need to tell the insurance company, who will most probably increase your premium to 'daft' amounts anyway.

Could work out cheaper starting with a slightly higher group.

Unless you don't tell them, in which case you risk driving with invalid insurence

Another Mod worth doing is learning to spell and type correctly!

Seriously though - go and look at some cars and then go to an insurance comparison website and put the car reg/s in and see what sort of quotes you get - it helped our lad decide what car was best for his pocket ALTHOUGH it was not his preferred car that he ended up with . . . Insurance for you young lads is expensive.... watch out for the excesses you can get loaded with by some firms too ;-(

A diesel would be a good choice, although if you want an earlier Ibiza MK4 you would have to get a 1.9TDi 100, as thats the smallest diesel they did. Until the 1.4TDi came out in about mid 2003 - 53reg. But for one of those it will be £3500>

Insurance will be a lot more for a diesel, 1.2 is group 2 i think, the 1.9TDi S is group 5, 1.9TDi SE group 6 and the 1.9TDi 130 Sport is group 7.Which means lots more insurance!

Plus you will have to declare all the mods, remaps etc. SOme insurance companies wont even want to know.

Still, you would need to declare all of the mods on a 1.2 also ... So you could probably insure a modified 1.2 or a standard 1.9TDi 100bhp S for the same.

Id go with the 1.2 for a first car, live with it a bit with subtle mods and then maybe upgrade if you want too.

i wouldnt bother going OTT on the mods to start off with for insurance purposes. i'm sure you can only declare up to 5 mods on most insurance online quotes, then they either want you to phone or just decline any more than 5. i used to own a heavily modified yaris and found bell were usually the cheapest to insure with mods. but if your a guy, only 17 and no no claims then i think you'll get declined quite a lot. maybe stick to suttle small mods to start with? i think its maybe good to point out that no matter how an amazing driver you think you are, you might crash. so if your going mad spending lots on mods then crash... usually insurance companies put cars back to standard so you will lose all your mods.

If you modify your car and don't declare it, the insurers won't be paying you a penny in the event of an accident

Yeah It really isn't a good idea not to declare them, I know you're probably paying stupid money for insurance already but as Leigh says if it's written off and they see something e.g performance enchaning mods like suspension etc. they will either give you a severly reduced amount back or nothing at all.
