Please help me. My 54 plate 1.8T Ibiza Cupra has developed a weird engine squeak on tick over which is pi##ing me right off. Has anyone had the same issue or any ideas as to what it may be.

Cheers
Jimbo

Could be the aux belt tensioner, I have the same thing and need to get round to fixing it (about £60 parts). Does it sound like a hamster wheel? :)

It does indeed sound like a hamster wheel and is only when warm. It was in having a new exhaust yesterday and wouldn't bloody do it for the mechanic!!!

If anyone finds out what it is I would be very interested to know as I have this too but no time to get it up on ramps to investigate. I suspect it's to do with the alternator belt area and hopefully not a bearing failure in the alternator :(

As said above, I had it diagnosed as the aux belt tensioner. £150 to fix (or a little over £60 for the tensioner, aux belt and bolts). You just need to pivot the tensioner back, stick a special VAG tool (screwdriver) throught a hole in the side which locks it in place, remove belt, pivot it back, undo 3 bolts, then put the new one in place and put the belt back on in the same way.

OK mate, I have the week after next off so I might have a look and maybe remove, lube and refit the tensioner.

I ain't seen the tensioner yet but It must have a bearing and as long as the bearing hasn't collapsed and spat out all the balls from the ball race I would have thought it could be saved.

I'll let you guys know if I have any joy.

Well I have had my aux belt tensioner off today and checked the bearing.

here is a few tips if anyone wants to have a go too.

Tools required.

First off remove the intercooler hose.

Then use a large adjustable to swing the tensioner back on it's spring.

No special tools required just poke an old screwdriver or allen Key through to hold the spring back.

Remove 3 bolts and off it comes.

How it looks off of the engine.

One torx screw and the roller comes off with the bearing molded into it. you can't just replace the bearing as you need to smash the roller to remove it. so if your bearing feels lumpy you need a new tensioner.

I found some muck in mine and I refitted the roller so that it rotates the other way, fingers crossed for no more mouse squeak sounds.....................

It does sound very very much the same but constant. is it fixed now?

No but was told by a garage it was the tensioner. Just haven't got round to doing it as they wanted £150, but I can get parts and do it myself for £50-£60.
