I'm having waste gate issues which are causing either overboost or no boost depending on where it is sticking.
Basically I have had a sticking waste gate for a while which was causing an overboost. I freed it off with some oil and by working the actuator manually with compressed air, it worked perfectly for about 1 journey then it stuck in the open position leaving me with no boost, I did the same again a couple of other times and it stuck either open or closed.
The waste gate is very stiff to move, initially needing a bit of gentle persuasion before being just about able to move it by hand. From another old turbo my brother has lying around it seems to me that the waste gate is just a flap and is not spring loaded or anything and doesn't need any force to move it, all the force comes from the actuator. The actuator seems fine it extends and retracts as it should and I can't move it by hand.
Basically what would be causing the waste gate to stick? I intend to take off the downpipe and have a look inside incase its caked up with crud, but to me while that explains it sticking open or closed it doesn't explain it being stiff to move.
Next question is, can you replace the waste gate or can you send the turbo away to get it replaced? I really don't want to buy another turbo as the rest of it is fine and boosts perfectly when the wastegate decides to play ball.
Maybe it is the actuator, I know you can get forge ones but they are pretty pricey. Are they better and can you use them on standard mapped cars?
P.s. whoever decided where the turbo should go on these engines needs shot !
