Venting Questions

I've been venting my tank the last few months since I found out about it, but just had a couple of question (that I probably should have asked first ).

With a diesel (specifically a PD130 in the FR TDi MkIV Ibiza), is there any harm in venting the tank?

Also, how much extra is it safe to put in? I usually put another 12L in after the cut-off, but I'm sure there's even more room.

depends when it cuts in, and how much fuel is already in the system. If you have driven pretty low, then the tank being 45L + 7L IIRC = 52L or so of fuel.

So if its clicking at 40 odd litres, that seems fine.

The only true way of finding out, is running out of fuel, filling it right up till it spilling out and seeing mow much it takes.

Dont listern to the "you should only vent a tank when your about to drive 100's of miles" rubbish either. If you brim it, then yes drive a tad, if you vent it like most on this forum being a diesel it wont need to be driven for the reason they give.

I used to vent when filling my Cupra TDI all the time, usually got an extra 7-8 litres in & thereby extended the range by another 80-100 miles.

I got mugged twice whilst filling up last week. Damn right I want to avoid it.



Also, I'm a lazy lazy man. I've no problem going when it's 'on my way', but with my last sh*t mpg car, I was forever pulling onto the drive at home and only then realising that I had no petrol after driving past about five stations. This way I can forget about it for ten days.

Here's what I managed to get in the Bora once.

with your low temps over in the UK your safe to vent as people have been doing, and i used to do without any issues at all. The extra space is to allow for expansion if you parked in the sun on a hot day. Its all about safety margins.

When venting - I normally get around 52 litres in just after the fuel light comes on so if you drove a further 100 miles the 57 litres sounds about right

There isn't really any pissing about - stick nosle in & fill till it stops.
Hold nosle on vent button & keep filling till it's full.

I think the extra minute or so filling is worth it for the extra 100+ miles on a tank

I normally put another 12 litres in when venting, getting close to 60 litres on occasion. I always drive to nearly empty and get around 600 - 650 to a tank.

Been venting for the past 4 years/75000 miles without a problem. (apart from the odd dribble down the bodywork)

why is this called venting, is this just filling your tank and the neck up to the brim?

At the airport we used to do this with every vehicle as 1 we weren't paying and there was spilt fuel all over the floor and 2. the vans ran 247 365days so got sick of going to the fuel farm all the time!

There is a little bit of plastic over to the right, when this is pressed (normally by putting the fuel cap back on) then it will release air, if you press this after it does its normal click off you can add more fuel in the tank, just press with the fuel nossle.

That's kinda my question!

I don't want to be smugly standing by the pump thinking "That's another 10L extra before I'm back here" as it p*sses out on the first corner.

I've never seen any stains around the filler cap afterwards, but is there somewhere else I should be looking for spills?

NONE is lost.

The Ibiza uses a vented fuel cap - the small plastic piece that is pushed to vent the tank is also pushed by the fuel cap when you screw it on.

I am also a biker and it concerned me when I was first told about venting the tank.
The last thing I want is to contribute to my Honda Blackbird skating across a forecourt on it's side.
