ive got 195/45 15 tyres on my motor. it hasn't been lowered or nothing, but the ride feels really harsh on the back end. i.e. i can feel every single bump. do you think if i put 195/50 15 on the back it would feel a bit softer? or maybe even 205/50 15? also, i'm just about to service it. what oil do you think i should use. i was thing 10w40

The 'correct' profile (i.e. closest to original rolling radius for speedo purposes) for those rims would be either: 185/55 15 or 195/50 15. You are correct that a higher profile introduces more compliance into the tyre and improves ride so the former with a 55 profile will be the largest gain.

I've used 5w40 fully synthetic in mine for the past 10 years with no problems.

195/45/15... bit of an odd size... are you sure that's what should be on there, did they come as standard, or part of an aftermarket wheel/tyre package?

The rolling diameter of a 195/45/15 tyre is 556mm. To keep the same rolling diameter, but increase the profile, you'd be looking at 175/50/15 tyre, which is the same 556mm rolling diameter. Again, this is another odd size.

195/50/15 sounds more likely, and this size tyre is actually cheaper too (and you'll have much better choice of makes/models of tyre).

The 195/50/15 has a rolling diameter of 577mm.

Ive got 195/50/R15 tyres on my wheels. I had 13 inch steelies on when i bought the car but swapped them for the alloys. The 195/50/R15 wheels and tyres are still within the + or - 2.5% of the rolling circumference or whatever it is. I used one of those calculator things on the internet to work it out.
