I have a 2001 Cupra (1.8t). Sometimes the turbo stops working, no boost at all. If i turn off the ignition & RESTART, it works again. the car has done 80k with no trouble (other than coils). My dealer says its prob a wastegate fault telling the ecu to shut down the turbo, restarting resets everything and lets it work again.
The dealer says they have to take off the turbo & see if they can rebuild it, they will charge me 2 hours for diagnostics, £350 plus vat to take a look THEN £1000 plus fitting if it needs a new turbo. I've also been told that the wastegate is integral & cant be replaced on its own (by one of the SEAT mechanics when i described the problem)..
Does anyone have any experience of this problem, is there an easier & cheaper way to fix it? Can the turbo BE rebuilt/fixed or should i just plump for a new one?
Please help.
