Tracking - rear tyre problems

Afternoon all.

I had my car MOT'd on Saturday and both rear tyres had to be replaced as the inner edges were worn to the core:censored:

They couldn't check the tracking as it was at my mates dealership so it's only programmed for theior models apparently.

Any way I done about 15000 mile son them so it's obviously quite bad.

My questions beofre I go and get it checked is:

1. is it worth getting it checked, by this I mean can the rear tracking be altered?

Thanks in advance, need to get it sorted before the new tyres wear.

:D

the rears are not adjustable as far as im aware.

How many miles have you done? - do you have any knocking when going over speed bumps etc?
have you lowered it? - if so how much?

It may be that the rear beam bushes have to much play in them, a not uncommon issue once leons have a few miles on them.
Not cheaper to replace, fair bit of labour though.

Thanks, it's done 44000 miles. No noticeable knocking.
4 wheel alignment, where would I get that done? I'm in Bristol.

Thanks for the replies.

4 Wheel alignment...the problem with this is, as I found out, that on the rears you can adjust basically nothing apart from move both wheels by moving the axle and the rears arent independently adjustable. However getting the tracking sorted on the fronts relative to the rears (i.e. using the 4 wheel alignment) may sort your problem out. Im not exactly sure what can cause rear inner wear but I guess somehow your car is crabbing.....

Strongly suspect the rear beam bushes, unless you have crappy tyres on the rear that are not XL (extra load) tyres that are required for the Leon as its a heavy car

Cheers everyone. The tyres were some budget make I think (on there when I bought the car). I now have Pirelli P6000 all round. I guess I'll just keep an eye on it for now then?

Bristol being the key thing here. Its all the stupid speed cushions the council keeps putting down. [:@] The result is that unless you manage to go over perfectly evenly, the tyre is sliding down the sides of the cushion. Mine have worn more heavily on the inside edges. A good cure would be to drive the car harder, then you would wear the outsides out with all the roundabout abuse which might even things up!

Thats my excuse any way

Andrew, until you change all the possible bushes, rod ends and ball joints its very difficult to pin this down.
Bush changes are one of the most over looked part of modding, most people only change bushes to go on the track. These parts of your car take a beating day in day out. If your cars second hand it might have drive up tracks for about 10,000 miles and that puts a huge amount of force onto these parts with all the bumps etc.

hmm ok , i hade changed the track rod end, perhaps look into bushes

whats best oem or uprated , my car is an everyday family hatch not a track car so dont want to compromise anything

cheers
OEM or uprated. Both very good at what they do. Uprated won't give you any extra vibration just more control

theres a company down my neck of the woods called pro trye i had the same problem with my wheels front and rear ...... i had been 2 too diffrent garges for the tracking, they both said it all fixed but it wasnt as soon as i road tested it it kept pulling to the left.... so i took it to a company called pro tyre, they did four wheel elinement for £25 and it turned out the near side toe was out by 1.5, not a lot then but enough to f**k up the inner edges of the tyres.......

so do a web search on pro tyre i think there nation wide.... and get it booked in!!!!

Sorry for the delay, no they're not XL, says max weight 650kg.

As for Pro-tyre that's where I usually go but thought I'd ask on here in case it was something common, guess I'll pop along to Pro-tyre on the weekend.

you don't need XL tyres if you're running the stock size of 245/55 R17
