Timpsons key cutting service

First off, i've gone and been an idiot and lost the flip key for my car :censored: which has left me with just the spare non-remote key so now i need to get a new one.

saw a sign in Timpsons window saying that they can do car keys so went into ask. The guy reckons that for around £45 he can supply a key (non-remote), cut it and copy the chip from the spare key. has anyone used this service before and is it any good? after reading previous threads it seems that programming the key is no easy task so am a bit sceptical about it.

this would then leave me without a flip key so my next query is if i bought a blank flip key off ebay which was the correct spec surely he could just do the same with that? would i then only have to pair up the remote on the key?

Cheers

I went in to a timpsons ages ago to ask this and they said they wouldn't touch it.

I did get a flip key off ebay for 26 quid and a blank blade i took the blank to an independent locksmiths/keycutters and they cut it, i then put it on the key with the little fideley pin!!!! and took it to seat thay programmed it for 45 quid.

Thats how i sorted my spare key out

I went to a local key cutter and he cut the key for about £5
All you'd then need to do is open up the spare key, remove the glass tube (Which is nice and easy) and put it into your flip key.
Took me about 3 minutes in total.

Personally I'd get the key cut but a local cutter, Buy a spare key and then get Seat to program it for £45 and have two flips.

45quid isnt too bad, i thought it'd be alot more than that. however saying that by the time i buy the fob and blade its gonna work out about £80!! All cos i lost my key, bloody annoying!

Silly question time, while all those solutions will work fine for getting the key to unlock and start the car, you still don't have a means of remote lock/unlock? Even if Timpsons would cut and recode a flip key, they couldn't recode the remote part of it?

Or am I missing something?

I've only noticed since using my non-remote key that everytime i unlock the car and get in it the alarm goes off. seems odd that the key does not turn the alarm off when unlocking the car . Im assuming then that i'm gonna have to get a remote key as im not putting up with that everytime. Unless ive got a faulty key of course!

I saw the guide on here about pairing up ur remote with the car so im guessing that will setup the remote unlocking bit. not sure how well it works though.

the hard/expensive part seems to be syncing up the transponder in the key so that it disables the immobilisor.

You're spare key doesn't turn off the alarm (I found this out by waking all my neighbours up one morning)

I thought this about pairing a new RCL key fob:

Put your spare in the ignition
Pair the new key fob
take the immo transponder from the spare key
Put it into the new paired RCL key fob

My only concern is when splitting the flip key's I think you have to take the battery out (can't remember correctly) that might clear the pairing that you just did?

No, thankfully that's not the case. Otherwise people would have to be taking their keys back to the dealer every time they changed their battery! :)

Send this guy a photo of your spare key blade.

He did mine and did a toop job - identical to my original and works a treat. Then as I said above, get a remote fob and programme the RCL with your spare, then remove the immob chip and put it into the remote fob.

cheers for the link, i reckon i'll have to give him a try.

I'll have to pick up a spare remote and programme that myself.

As for the immob chip, i've only got the one spare key and from what i can see it looks glued in so im cautious about trying to remove it incase it breaks. plus this would only leave me with one useable key anyway. I've heard buying the immob chips are pretty cheap but its the programming of them that costs a fortune! gonna have to work out where to get that done.

I took my £42 flip key from ebay to timpsons and had blade cut, they didnt cut deep enough on first attempt therefore would not go in lock or ignition, but went back abd he cut it deeper and altho a little notchy at first its wore in fine and now slips in n out of ignition brilliantly, only been a fortnight
