Personally I would never risk a cambelt to 80k or 4 years. Mines nearly done 40k /4 years and I'm preparing myself to do battle with the toothed belt and camshaft sprokets.....

My Toledo 2.0TDi Sport DSG is now on 77k miles and due it's next serice in 1k. (it will be 4yrs old in Dec.)
Timing belt change is definitely at 80k miles or 4 years and mine is still intact!
What is a bit worrying, eben though mine is a co. car is that the 8ok service with cambelt has been quoted as £600+ from Seat dealer.

Having studied the Haynes Manual and elsawin, it doesn't look to difficult (especially compared to an Alfa V6...)
I'll try to get some photos when I do it.
Does Altea have the big or little engine support at cambelt end.
JT - unfortunately you just can't tell what condition a cambelt is in by looking at, on or off the engine. So many engines go bang because the cambelt "looked" ok.
if you've ever tried turning a camshaft, you'll know how much strain that belt (and the tensioners/pulleys) is under!

nice one. Any troble getting the timing sorted? I can't make sense of the "vernier" cam sprockets - how do you know when the sprocket is in the correct place on the small scale?
