Has anyone got had any probs with timing belts failing . I have a mk1 `02 cupra which is coming up to 50k .I know seat say it`s to be changed at 120k but there`s no time limit . As the car is coming up to 5 years old I`m getting a little worried about the age of the belt .

It's not something you want to take a chance on really. For the sake of £500 (max) for the new cambelt, metal water pump and all the other bits + fitting, it's well worth doing.

I know it's money you'd rather be spending on more interesting things... but if it does fail you'll regret it.

Also, don't rely on mileage alone as an indication of when this should be done. Mileage tells you how far the car has travelled, but doesn't tell you how long the engine has been running for! Just think about all the times you've (or whoever had the car before you) have sat in traffic with the engine running... the belt is still working away then! It just doesn't show on the mileage, that's all. That's why it's important to get it changed based on time alone if you're mileage per year is below average.

I am in a very similar position, Feb 2002 manufactured cupra, although mine's only done 28000 miles, still having it done, for peace of mind more than anything.

Had quotes from 2 seat dealers, both about £320 for belt & water pump, but that was without the metal impellor. Would that add on much to the price ?

It shouldn't add a great deal. Try and get a price from some independent VAG specialist garages too, just for comparison.

getting my water pump and timing belt done today, 100 plus vat labour and 33 quid for parts which I sourced from gsf. Why pay silly money?

My local dealer can do the pump with the metal impellor for the same price,£320, tried 2 independent dealers £300ish & £340. Looks like the dealer is the best price...NO THIS IS NOT A JOKE!!!

i wasn't, no. i was going to source the parts and get it done locally.

should i be doing it myself? i reckon i'd balls it up - i couldn't even remove my MAF sensor yesterday, as i didn't have a torx plus security bit :D

I wouldn't attempt to do this job myself for a few reasons...

Firstly, I'm a computer engineer, not a mechanic!

Secondly, I'd want to be 1000% sure it was done right, as a badly fitted belt is potentially the last thing your engine will ever know about.

Lastly, I'd want the proper stamp in the book / receipts to show it was done professionally for when it comes to resale time.

Even if you change the belt yourself, its recommended that its taken to Seat to have the tension checked.
