Full set of essential VAG timing belt tools is available here. You can buy just the diesel kit I think, but I haven't looked for it.

A mate works for VW, and the pd engine timing belt change is one job that they're required to have checked by another technician before the engine is turned over. He's never cocked on up, but he still gets it checked when he does them. Destroys the engine if you don't have things correct, or at the very least bends a few valves and makes it a bad day for the technician involved.

sounds like a b@st@rd of a job can't seem to find enough information on it just bits here and there on the odd vw forum. may have to find a specialist which is frustrating when you work in a garage yourself

Its an easy job with the correct tools the hardest part being getting the belt onto the cam pulley, it will be really tight even before you tension the belt!

I bought a timing tool kit when I did my Passats timing belt (same engine).

Didn't cost much, think it was from Laser tools ?

Have to dig around and see if I can find which set it was.

From memory you need:
1) A locking pin to poke through the cam pulley
2) A prop to take the tension off the tensioner
3) A device that locks the crank pulley - it's got teeth that engage with the crank pulley, then locks into the block.
