Timing Belt Change - every 4 years ? Plus How to keep her running at her best ?

Hi,

My car is a 2005 1.9 tdi (130 BHP) with 37,000 miles. Car has to date been serviced at the main dealers. I am keen to keep the car for many more years and miles hence want to get is serviced and maintained properly.

Car is now due for a service and have been advised that it requires the following :
( a 40K or main service )

Oil change
Inspection Service
Pollen filters
Air filter
Brake fluid
Timing belt [ changed ever 4 years according to dealer ]

Is this correct all ? Have been quoted £520.00 to get this job done at the dealers….
Is the schedule all correct? Does the car need anything else to keep it running at its best ?

What should I expect to pay at an independent for this sort of work done ?

Yep, that sounds like a 4 year service. The brake fluid is every 2 years, the timing belt is every 4 years (or 40k or possibly 60k miles on your Alhambra), and the rest is standard 40k miles stuff.

Brake fluid could be £40 - £80, timing belt could be £350 - £450, service with oil and filters could be £150 - £250, so I don't think that's too far off for a main dealer. Maybe knock £100 - £125 off for an indie dealers.

As said... I have been advised it should be changed every 4 years or 60,000 miles which ever comes sooner..... so in yours and my case recommended it gets done.

Have also been advised to get the water pump changed at the same time ( adds about £70 for the parts on to the job however could save a load of hassle in the long term ).

If you like me are planning on keeping the car for a while could be money well spent.

:clap: well impressed with my new bus (had it about 6 months), so not changing it for a long time :blink: I hope!

:rolleyes: unlike my last bus (Toyota Estima) :whistle: only overdue an oil change, but because of crappy weather never got round to doing it and.......... :-o siezed it :confused: oops

I have a 98 Bammer and its coming up for a service ..118000 mile one...thats a cam belt change so i am getting prices from a few garages.. The main dealer is a bit steep...

The old bus is going well but things are starting to go..gearbox cables have been replaced recently, the wipers are playing up..and the power steering make squeeky sounds and vibrations on full lock whilst not moving..and idea on the steering problem may be a help..is it the pump or belt ? or both..

Check out the forums for other models as this is a common query. We sell a HUGE number of parts thru SCN so check prices before committing to work done anywhere

Hi,
In the end had the work done by Autoetechnik ( specialist in Audi, VW, Seat and Skoda ) in Nottingham. They carried out :
full 40K service (oil change, inspection, sump seal, pollen filter, fuel filter )
brake fluid change
picked up and dropped off the car
plus interior / exterior clean

All for £230 inc vat. ( using genuine seat parts )

Fantastic service, good value and very knowledgeable. Can not see me taking the car anywhere else. Highly recommended.

Will be getting the Cam belt plus water pump changed in the next few months.

My 01 Bammer has just 44k on her, however changed he belt when she was 4yrs old along with the AC belts - well it was all out at the time, so made sence to change them too..

Issues - Hmmm well none really - oh rear wash arm seems to be sticky (sometimes) and the foldy mirrors pack up - changed o/side n/side needs to be done at some point - other than that - REVO them - makes it a great wee beastie ...

I have an 04 TDI (130). The cambelt should be changed every 60k miles - no mention of doing it every 4 years in the manual.

That's news - could catch people out if they do less than 15k per year.
Any idea why the recommendation changed? I would expect mechanical wear to be the issue for a belt, not simple ageing.

Not that its my personal opinion ;) but the argument is that any car serviced regularly at a dealership will have all the latest recommendations applied.
Rubber perishes over age no matter it has done 5000 or 50000 miles
Every manufacturer has chopped and changed intervals after some catastrophic early failures - ask any Alfa Romeo owner :lol:
