Hi guys,
Is it easy/hard to clean the throttle body? Where exactly is it and what would i need to do it? Car feels like its choking sometimes when accelerating, wondered if giving the throttle body a clean would help the engine? I doubt its ever been done.

Hi ding-dong,

I don't know where it is or how to clean it (!), but I'm sure it can't be too difficult and it could quite likely solve your problem.

I say this because I was also recently suffering with a kind of stutter/choke when accelerating in my 51 Cupra. Having never had the throttle body cleaned in all 6 years ( to my knowledge, anyway), I took it into a garage highly recommended by guys on here and other forums - psituning in Newcastle-Under-Lyme.

The guy had the car for just over half an hour - cleaning the throttle body, checking hoses, checking the sparks, etc... - and she's been accelerating as smooth as anything since. The sum total for all this good stuff - half an hour's labour charge ( approx £20). I can't recommend these guys enough.

So I don't think it can be too hard a job for a mechanic to do - but I'm no mechanic!!
:D

Found a thread which shows where its located etc which is good.

Was also thinking about changing the coolant temp sensor as im getting the following symptoms.. the coolant gauge pretty much always reads 0, every now and again it shoots up to 90 stays for a few seconds then shoots back down. I assume this is the coolant temp sensor?

I cleaned mine a while ago and it was a piece of cake. The only thing was that without a registered copy of VagCom you cannot do a full throttle body reset.

TTS recommend it is done every 10k

Throttle body clean can be done quick and easy with out you dismantling it.
1.Go to local motorfactors or halfords and buy throttle body cleaner/carb cleaner (spray)
2.Undo the jubilee clip that holds the large pipe on from the intercooler
3.grab a rag and spray the cleaner in the TB and catch the excess. Wait until the liquid isnt dark anymore (the tb will be clean)
4. Replace all parts
5.Disconnect the battery for 5 minutes
6.Reconnect
7.Turn ignition on but not engine on
8.Wait for a minute til the TB recycles (high pitch buzzing)
9.Start the car once the buzzing has gone (it may start a little rough but let it idle for a few)
10. Enjoy

AND DO NOT TOUCH THE BUTTERFLY VALVE!!! The liquid does the job itself

jus out of interest sargey...why not to touch the butterfly valve?

I took mine off and gave it a proper clean opened the valve up to clean the edges where it was sticking and everything is fine!

You get a much better and easier clean if you take it off....its only 4 allen key bolts

This is not the procedure for a TB reset, we always thought it was but it now turns out it isn't.
The only thing was that without a registered copy of VagCom you cannot do a full throttle body reset.

Vag com is the only way

Not exactly sure as to why you dont touch the butterfly, but with the new spray cleaners you really dont have to. I used to have a 12years old Mazda MX6 V6 and i looked at the TB before i sprayer the cleaner and afterwards and it even shined!!!
Another thing we used to do with the MX^ was to bore the TB as there was a 'lip'. Is this the case with the cupra does anyone know?

Ding Dong - Check to see what colour the top of your coolant sensor is, if it is green ( sure its green? do a search as lots of threads on here) its a old one and they are often faulty i had a problem with mine and the car was hard to start, turned out it was reading something like minus 40 whenever i started the car! Easy to fit, 10 min job.

did this on my Leon a while back, took it off and cleaned and touched the butterfly valve, no issues with it what so ever

I feel taking it off and cleaning it works better than the spray stuff, but thats just my opinion :)

anyone got a piccy of where the throttle body is?

throttle body is on the start of the inlet manifold

so where the pipe comes up from the Intercooler it then joins onto the inlet manifold, and the part which sits between the pipe and the inlet manifold has allen type key bolts holding it on

this is the throttle body, if that makes sense

what does it mean if you get low reading via vag com on a tb alignment as my figures was on the low side but it did run better after and the numbers was within the range

Don't think it means much more than it was out of alignment.
Might point towards it being dirty?

my readings was after a really good clean it made a bid differance to drive and revs but just made me think is this right as im new to vag com an could do with someone who knows vag com to check an set some of my settings

Always best to take the TB off for a full cleaning, means you can get both sides of the butterfly with the carb cleaner.

Just need to make sure you don't apply pressure to the butterfly (i.e. try to open it) because you'll damage the stepper motor. You can *touch* it but don't push it.

Grab a new TB gasket from the stealers, only a couple of quid.

Gasket Part no: 028129748

The 4 bolts holding the TB to the inlet manifold should be retightened to 10Nm ;)

Job done!
