the funny thing is, my '90 mk2 golf felt better built than my 02 cupra.

i think if i really start tuning i'll look for a mk2 as a daily... i miss the simplicity and ease of repair, but i love the power and looks of the cupra...

In fairness my Cupra has been pretty reliable to date, only the normal MAF and coil packs have gone so far *touches wood

Seems a lot of people have a lot of niggly issues but to be blunt, how many of those are because of something you've changed on the car? Any modified vehicle is likely to have occasional hiccups, that's par for the course.

wow i cant beleave how many people feel the same as i do

as said tho it will be a very hard job to find something that quick for the same sort of money

ive just had enuf of it stupid lil problems all the time as i said i dont think ive had a hassle free year with the cupra, all in all and this includes modes and fixing it i think ive spent nearly close to four grand on it,wich when i think about it that reay dos my nut as the money realy at the end of the day could have been put towars a house or a fast car that comes out of the box if you know what i mean

yea the R32 are a fair bit of money and they ant all that quick, more abot the looks and sound for me but they come all singing and danceing out of the box s that means for me no need to spend any money on it ect ect,you do get what you pay for

the cupra just feels like a massive money magnet for me and im fed up of it i cant throw any more at it,it becomeing silly

if you are a modder, buying another 'out of the box' fast car, will just be a money magnet, just starting from a more expensive position

how many of the issues people moan about are self inflicted
maf, coilpacks are the main ones, the rest are silly pipe leaks etc or poor quality mods, or ill fitted.

tbf the issues i have jad are just small niggly issues like the MAF, Plugs etc... but it all adds up and now i think my exhaust is blowing and that will be a costly fix as i will replace it with a full stainless system.

I've been missing my Cupra ever since i sold it, but when i read threads like this it makes me realise how expensive it was to run and makes me feel a little better.

Was the most reliable car i've owned to be fair though.

If you buy from a dealer with warranty, then i dont mind if stuff go wrong as long the dealers sort it out in the warranty. Most turbo cars tend to play up espically if you mod it,

These are not unreliable cars if you look after them and don't modify them to within an inch of their lives.

1.8t must be one of the most sound engines ever produced..

Best of luck if you do sell.. they're also worth virtually nothing these days compared to the £7000 i parted with about 5 years ago ;-) 165,000 miles later that, plus the fact I still LOVE it, is why I'm keeping mine.

Edit to defend Rovers... or specifically the K-series engine.. ALSO very reliable if you don't modify it badly... have to admit it's not much good in a 90,000 mile 218, but it's great in a Caterham or other light car with good cooling and airflow!

im not planning to sell up for unreliaibilty just fancy a change, but your right with saying about buying a more expenisve car, once uv modified a few it normally carrys on, once you see others looking better, quicker etc

iv never had big problems with mine one maf and a coilpack, you look at other vw's a a few people i know have had to do the same on newer unmodified cars

cars always will have problems

i agree mate when i first bought mine it was a prestige car to have for my age and an expensive car not the norm like saxos and corsas but as time went on i owned the car for 3 years it looks aged even tho the car had 10k put into it was fast and in outstanding condition. The car was very reliable the only things that really did my head in was the front bumper hit the ground alot but that was the only way i could have the car because of its looks and the rattles on the interior.
The mk3 cupra then dropped loads in price some going for 2k so the people that had saxos now started buying them so it was no longer a prestige car and like you say your alot older in now a boy racer car.

my car was a 1.9 20vt (bored out) ko3s hybrid 90k on the clock in mint condition i had the car up for sale for 6k, as much as wanted close to the asking price nobody was willing to pay it because there are so many up for sale with the same power/mod just less money, even tho they did have there faults sold it for £5450 in the end if that helps anyone.

by the way im not say that if you own a mk3 cupra your a boy racer

Was having this discussion with the missus over the weekend, as she argued that the Ibiza Cupra was a boy racer car. I disagreed, thinking back to when I first owned it, but looking at current prices and the sort of people now buying them it seems she's probably right :( Still, not that it's putting me off driving mine, love every second of it!

sad to hear so many of you are dis-illusioned with the cupra and so many have had problems.

I'm currently looking to buy a mk3 (have a mk2)so am keeping an eye on this, but think that many are over-priced for what is now a 7 year old car.

According to Parkers used guide, a 20vt in good condition (private sale) is priced at just over £3k.

not trying to be picky but i've seen ads on pistonheads looking for up to £6k, the cars are just not worth that, regardless of what mods have been done to it

at the end of the day they are hard to get hold of. i know when i was looking for mine 4 weeks or so ago. i had to travel to get one, let alone a decent one. lucky for me a guy on local sold me his who was just down the road. what would the cupra 1.8t be worth in 3 year?
