The difference between a 1.4 and cupra..

So how much of a difference does it feel going from a 1.4 Ibiza to a 2.0 gti? I'm looking into upgrading to a nice 8 valver in September.

Talked to my very egotistcal (and a bit of an *rse) brother who reckons it'll be too much for me having just 1 years driving experience. Reckons it'd be too much power for me and (how nicely) reckons I'll crash it.

Told him that like anything when you upgrade you take it easy at first until you get used to it. So how different is it between the two?

They're not that quick, 113bhp roughly, so a bit more grunt than yours "nippy" is how my boyfriend would describe it.

You'll notice it more on the insurance big time if you have only been driving a year!

it states 115, but it tends to be a bit more if the car has been maintained properly.
I know of a certain someone on here who has a print out of a standard cupra 8v with panel filter and a few drilled holes and its come up with 124.something

they are good cars, and i definately recognised the difference , im the same as u mate i got my cupra a year after having my 1.4.

Mine was Rolling roaded at 125bhp, just had a blitz air filter on it (stolen from mr dads mr2). And before anyone says it......no the airfilter didnt give me 10bhp, it more than likely didnt improve things at all. It now runs a butchered swiss cheese airbox and standard paper filter.

They are nippy cars but life is all about progression. I just moved to a 180bhp+ diesel. Now thats a big step

from approx 60 bhp (is it about that on a 1.4) upto a 'book' 115 ( more likely approx 125bhh) is a good chunk of grin Factor going under your right foot.. if its been looked after, should be pretty easy to stop it too.. which is always a good thing when your needing it..

To be honest, I've narrowed it down to 2 cars:

The 8v ibiza or a series 1 106 Rallye - 1.3 engine, 105bhp, about 850kg.

Although the 106 would be more efficienct for fuel, its french. And would break loads. I want something thats reliable as my trusty 1.4 which I've had no problems with!

But my insurance on a 106 rallye would be alot less than the 8 valve..


I don't know if a little 105bhp 106 would be faster than a 120bhp ibiza or not..

Don't listen to your brother - I had a 1.4 ibiza and went to a 2.0l 8v cupra in less then a year.. Yeah it was quicked but I didnt feel the need to rag it about as i knew I had the power.

I dont think its that a big jump.. Do what you want but good luck with insurance

Mine reads about 119.5 and about 140lb per foot of torque that was rolling roaded at that

I don't have any height problems - only a mini 5ft 4" haha

My gf went from a m plate festy si to an 8 valver with a years experience. She's driven a fair few cars through her work. The power is smooth and not going to catch you out unless you're a complete koont.

115bhp is a very pessimistic figure IMO. It nails my torquey 2ltr e30 cabby

Haha, yeah I'm 6'1" with size 12 A friend of mine is picking a 106 up within the next 2 weeks so I'm going to give it a test drive and see how I am with it. A lovely copper ibiza is so tempting though!

I'd love to try test driving a cupra, but I don't want to waste a seller's time. And I wouldn't legally be allowed to due to being TPFT. It just seems a more sensible car - And being a musician I have gear to lug about now and then.


If for example I bought an ibiza and needed to drive it back home, would I just be able to get 1 day insurance to drive it home? I won't be driving it until November, but buying one in September/October.

I went from a 1.4 ibiza to my cupra after just 1 year. And too be honest as soon as i took it for a test drive i knew i was buying it lol.
Insurance was a touch too. Was paying £800 for the 1.4 and managed to get the cupra insured for £950.
Its not going to catch you out as the others have said its not 'too fast' but has got enough grunt. Definitely have one over the french 106.

Cheapest quote through Confused.com was 1700.. But it's always possible to find cheaper than that (I'm 18)

Ahh. I had just turned 20 when i got my cupra. I got that quote with direct line. If you pick up a max power magazine and look in the back theres loads of insurers advertising for young drivers and high performance cars. Also (not sure why) but with my current insurer, Adrian flux, just saying that i was a member of a SCN i got £80 knocked off the price.

In all honesty its your address that will be the cost. So depends on your area and how its rated!

Well I had my 1.4 ibiza (60bhp) for 14 months, and then I saved up some hard earned cash and got the valver (150bhp) when I had just turned 18. The extra power is VERY noticeable, but its not like you are going from a FWD to a RWD car, so you are alright. Its not going to catch you out. As for the rallye......... I have a soft spot for fast little hathes, such as the type 1 106, but like others have said, you get more of a package when you get an Ibiza. If you were ever to crash your 106, the only crumple zone will be your face, whereas the Ibiza is much safer. You get electrics, aircon, 2 airbags..........whereas in the Rallye you dont even get door cards.

Nice for the track = yes
Daily driver = no

No it wasn't actually But because the car was garaged overnight, and my occupation is "respectable university student" the insurance came to a total of £1250 per 10 months. This year I got a renewal at £880 per 10 months, so I pretended that I was going to switch insurance unless I get a better renewal............and hey presto its only going to be £840 per 12 months now

Still bum rape but can't be picky at my age.

p.s. SEARCH around. I spent about 7 hours searching around filling out stupid quote forms, but at the end of the day it was worth it. DO NOT use confused.com, they are a rip off. Quoted me like £2700

Just had an idea.. So a mate of mine who lives about a 2 minute drive away has their own garage which they don't use. If I were to put down that it was stored in a garage overnight would they ever actually check up on this? As I could just use this garage as evidence.

Also, would putting down I'm a student be cheaper?! I put down that I was a Sales Assistant rather than Student..

That is right, im in a high-risk postcode/area because of all the 17-18 year-olds who go crashing there cause and writing them off and that.

I know someone who went from a 205 to a saxo vtr, they had it one day and they crashed it!! Got it for a bargain as well because the guy needed rid of it a.s.a.p, then he goes n crashes it!! The loan hadn't even been transfered into his bank account!!
