when im driving the temp needle on the dash will rise to 90 then drop and rise for a while and sometimes settle back on the 90 and sometimes near the 60. I have checked the level and its fine. The fan is also coming on. Hopefully this is easily and cheaply sorted.

mechanics may charge you a fortune dealer quoted me 150 for the temp sender doing when in face its slightly more difficult than changing a cd in the changer lol

just taken covers off to see where green sensor goes and have 2 questions. 1 wheres the thermostat and 2 wheres the best place to get a Y shaped breather hose and what looks like the 2 hoses that come off what i think is the n75 valve,[next to dump, recirc valve] as they are split?

n75 hose is simple vacuum hose ebay?

the thermostat is just under the inlet manifold to the left next to the alternator

Just as info I had this problem for ages, replaced the sender for a green on from ebay for £6-7 and it made no difference.

Had a fault code which the garage logged as a faulty sender. But I thought it was the thermostat since I'd replaced the green thing. They replaced the thermostat as part of a whole range of work they did for me the other day and said the fault didn't seem to resolve, so replaced the sender too.
It's now resolved which is great but for some reason they charged me £21 for the temp sender unit, seems odd if it's the same thing I paid £6-7 as I'd be surprised if they took the piss seeing as they charged me £9 for the 'stat and generally are the most trustworthy bunch I know.

Is is likely the unit of ebay was crap? or are we talking two different things here? the receipt shows 4 pin temp sender unit, which I can only assume is the same thing! Maybe I fitted it wrong :s...or it was the 'stat.

In addition, I was getting 120-30 from half a tank, I've done 170 and not reached half way yet, I know things aren't linear but it feels like I might make 50-100 extra per tank....as Lee said a while back, how can you afford NOT to do it!

Looks like i will have to have a trip to GSF and europarts tommorow and get a few bits. Found a silicon Y breather on ebay for £25 + a couple of quid delivery.

i wouldn't fit anything other than a genuine one and that seems about the right price, can't trust ebay stuff, especially for that price ... you get what you pay for

Sensor done, very easy, ran the engine after massaging the pipes to make sure air is out and seems to be ok. The thermostat looks like it will be a pain to get to, lots of pipes in the way, so will leave it for now and see if just doing the sensor has done the job. Ordered a crankcase breather (Y shaped) from ebay, £25 silicon hose including delivery, should hopefully be here midweek. Does anyone know where to get the vacum hose that goes from the top of the N75(next to the dump, recirc, diverter valve) out of a `T` piece and what size it is? Inside and outside diameters. Local Seat dealer thinks about £35 (they come as a pair), and VW dealer says £55. Thanks for all the help so far, has probably saved me a few pennies towards mods that i want to do.
