if you look at the inside of the airbox its got various grooves and bits sticking out. People cut them out and make them smooth and all flush. People have reported some benefits. I'm on the fence, as I think its a bit of a faf to gain 0.1bhp :)

i haven't looked into this properly YET but I'm told the original air filter and box is best so here's my plan my dad had the cupra 1.8t and upgraded to a induction kit and is bring his old air filter box to me I'm going smooth it off like you said and drill a 4inch ish hole and attach a forced air pipe thru the hole and putting the other end maybe were the spots are, i haven't yet looked at the box or anything so I'm not sure exactly whats there ?

On my old pd150 hybrid I used a panel filter kn, a bmc cda, and a jetex cone. The cone gave me the best power and the best throttle response. Between that and the intake sits a bloody great big intercooler. You cant compare against different makes of cars as that's not very scientific. Ford tdci intercoolers are frankly so small it's funny.

Ideally I'd experiment with multiple intake systems on the same car and use a dyno to measure the differences between each, but time and money prevents this. My day job isn't car tuning!

However, the guy at Autospeed caried out lots of pressure drop testing of different intake systems and his results convinced me that the actual filter element in most cases made very little difference to the overall pressure drop through the entire air inlet / airbox system.

The Ford IC was smaller than the front mount fitted to the VW 150hp 1.9 PD engine, but larger than that fitted to the 130hp versions. It was a sort of semi-top-mount though which meant that hot air could pass through it from the engine bay when the car was stationary, heating the core. When moving, the air scoop passed cold air over the core and into the engine bay.

I used to be a member of ffoc so I've experience with tddi and tdci's. The cooler was longer and not very high if my memory serves me right. I'd say the area was about the same, but not as deep. Pressure drops is just one part of the story. Having not seen what the chap has tested, did he test a pd150 by any chance?

Anyho I have seen the results for myself and experienced the gains on my hybrid. I'd agree that you would probably loose power with a cone in an engine bay of a n/a car, but it's not the case as much with turbo vehicles.
