TDi Induction

Pre-empting the soon-to-be purchase of a new beast i thought i'd assess the options for modifications....

I've had an open cone induction kit on my current car and enjoyed the growl (lol even though it was a 1.1i). I understand that open cones are noisier that panel filters in both petrol and diesels, however compared to a petrol how loud is diesel induction? (cone or panel)

I have never liked cone filters, something my mechanic said a while back put me off.

I've smoothed and drilled my OEM box and at some point need to get a cotton filter in there. Sound is fabulous, not lound when driving normally but at higher revs it does sound nice. Took a couple of hours to do but was free, worth trying first.

I was thinking about a panel filter first to be honest as it's cheaper and less time consuming to fit one as opposed to an entire enclosed cone kit, and as long as the sound is still good i think i may have to go for that.

Hi Pheonix, if you`re after a panel filter either the GREEN or the K+N work well, most people seem to use the GREEN but there is no difference between the two (I have the K+N).
I also have a 160 intake but when I was using just the panel filter you could tell the difference.

I used to have a cone filter:

But I did`nt like it... too loud at idle and you have to make a bracket to mount it somewhere.

I currently have a Jetex cone in mine with a cold air feed straight to it and it feels more responsive than with a panel filter, BUT it doesn't sound as good as my drilled airbox with 4" aluminium cold feed, that sounded awesome.

I've got a pipercross panel filter, and just replacing that from standard made a decent difference. I'll then eventually be adding large cold air feed & smoothing & drilling the air box (when I can be arsed!).

Open cone filters only good when you've got a decent heat shield around it. Other wise it'll just suck in hot air which you don't want!

It was a long time ago, heat and dirt amongst other things and he didn't think it made enough of a difference to bother. But thats just one opinion.

i use an open cone too in my mk2 tdi. Ive shoved the cone down by the light box and have 2 cold feeds ducted to it. One through the grille and the other through the side vent in the aero kit. the difference is noticable and worth the effort.

I've toyed with the idea of a Jetex cone, i've heard loads of good things about them, possibly a future mod i think.

You say drilling your airbox..... i've heard of drilled/grooved brake discs but surely drilling holes in the airbox isn't good for it? Or is it? Lol!

Open cone filters if placed in the engine bay will give more noise but you will loose bhp as the cone filter will suck in hot air from the engine bay. Hot air is less dence then cold air therefore less oxygen can be sucked into the engine.
You probably haven`t heard of people drilling the airbox as most people stopped doing something as stupid as that 10 + years ago.

I think the drilling holes in the air box thing is more to do with getting a bit more noise than performance isn't it?

Hahahaha! Brilliant! Well, no drilling for me then...... i suppose you could tube the holes to an external source, forcing more air in.... what am i saying..... it's ridiculous! Not long now!!!

The only reason for the PD160 intake mod on an ibiza is because it has a restrictive intake on the lower models. Where as the Leon has the same airbox for all models no matter how much power, this standard airbox has been proven to be very good and made a little better with a panel filter, maybe smoothing.
