It's a driving aid rather than a safety aid - it will save you a few pounds on new tyres and also help people who can't feed the throttle.i dont want to have to switch the TCS off everytime io get in the car as its a safety aid surely......
But it is a bit brute force as you say, and in fact a little wheel spin is often a hell of a lot better than massive power loss just when you need it.
I leave it on in the wet to keep help my tyres last a little longer, but when I want to make quick progress it goes off!
The 'safety aid' you mention will be the ESP - and you can't actually shut this off (whatever the button in your car says on it).
