got car back from garage last week and is covered in spots of tar everywhere. been using g3 paste and dry cloth to get it off but it takes too long and too much effort. 3hours of scrubbing and only got 2doors done. have been told wd40 removes tar quite easily but does anyone know if its going to affect the paint ive read it doesnt but need to be sure

I used WD40 when replacing my 'R' badge on the boot to remove the backing foam. It took it and the glue off very well, and I just had a pot of soapy water and a sponge to hand to periodically remove the WD40. I gave the area a good wash when I was done using it. My paint had no reaction to it this way.

Tardis,Iron X and WD40 will all work well, although a clay bar will remove it too,its a bit too harsh and will wreck the bar all to easily imho. Thin it down 1st with a spray,THEN clay it to remove every last bit.

I purchased my first cupra 150 tdi in early 2012 and it needed a massive clean and tar spots were pretty major, I used a tin of brake and caliper cleaner (aerosol) and this worked wonders in removing every spot and caused no damage to paintwork

On previous cars I've just used a conservative amount of white spirit (already mentioned by someone else further up the thread) which is cheap enough and won't damage the paint. It removes tar spots really quickly and easily. I just make sure I wash any residue off straight afterwards though to be on the safe side.
