The baby 1.4 has developed a lovely tappety noise.. sometimes its there on idle but not very offten.. but its there all the time now when i accelerate getting faster and faster as the revs climb..

Now my question.. is this something to really worry about? how hard is it to fix? how much am i looking at forking out to get it fixed?

its a N-reg mk2 and aint worth much lol

Any help no matter how basic or technical is much appreciated

im pretty sure an oil change will make it sound better but im pretty sure it costs some dollar to get it totally fixed. i think its due however to how often you change your oil so if its been in there a while it may be that thats caused it...

or i could just be chatting rubbish

or ''in the trade'' they put saw dust into the oil i think (probably best not to do this tho ey!?)

i think its damaged, as opposed to something causing it, in a sense that you wont get rid of it unless it is actually fixed. i have it on mine, but i regularly change my oil, so all i can presume is that it happened before i got the car and its just got to a point where its started to become a little noisy. an oil change may make it sound better tho...

ill have a look into it, cos if theres an easy fix ill get it done to mine

The hydraulic lifters hold oil inside them. When the engine is not started for a few days, some of that oil bleeds out. When this happens the lifters will be noisy until that oil is replaced by pressure from the oil pump. Not changing the oil at regular intervals does promote "sluge" build-up in the lifters, which can cause them to be noisy. Also, drain the oil when the engine is warm after driving.

The Tapping noise isndicates your tappets are out, but that could be due to either a worn camshaft, worn rockers and or rocker shaft, but can be temporaraly fixed by adjusting the valve clearences, which is a fiddly job, but must be done right, if not done properly the risk of engine faliure is high.

To sort out the tappet noise for good you need to replace the cam, pushrods, rockers etc all at the same time, if you just replace one of em, the chances of the noise coming back very soon or not going at all, are very high!

Got that info off several sites, so i guess its a case of live with it. i thought as much tho, im pretty sure an oil change will make it better tho as from the first post, there wont be any sludge in new oil, and as i said regular oil changes should stop the build up of sludge.

if im wrong someone will tell you
