Tailgate lever intermittent

My wife's car's tailgate wouldn't open intermittently. Bought a new lever/handle but it's still the same.

Handle seems to be working fine. No sound from the latch when it does not work. Hard to investigate when it's intermittent, always works when I've got it apart to test it!

Any tips for what to look at next?

I do! never thought to check that. Had it plugged into the car today too, clearing the service reminder.

I'd be surprised if there were any codes though.
