No placebo mate, cause the pipes don't flex when the boost comes on it felt stronger.
If you rev your LCR on the spot you can see the upper intercooler hose flex like a frogs throat where as the uprated silicon ones don't.

The reason that the TIP is important is because it is being sucked inwards (under negative pressure) and constricting the air flow, whereas the other hoses essentially the opposite way around (under positive pressure) and won't cause a problem. They are worth replacing over time due to age as the older they get the more likely for splits to occur, but there will be zero performance increase. Mainly they look nicer when changed...
