Sudden Braking in Reverse

I didn't know my car will apply the emergency brake and Stop! when reversing? I reverse into my garage today as I always do, and as far as I could see I was not too close to anything, when Bang! the car braked itself, I thought I had hit the wall as the car stopped that quick o_O I did know the car would brake itself if you were driving forward and something was too close in front, but not while I was reversing!
Now I Know!

Yeah, it's the city braking function(aeb) , just like it does for going forward, have had it before on my Leon, does shock you the first time it does it!!

I thought I reversed into my dad's car while parking a few weeks ago, again I had family in car when 'bang' it suddenly stopped ( my head was elsewhere for that split second) Without thinking I moved forward again and was thinking s*hit. I got out went round the back and was praying the damage was minimal...

Not a scratch on either car, not a dent or any sign at all of any contact on either car. I counted my lucky stars and was questioning whether I hit it. I assumed I had as I was under the impression the auto braking wouldn't work at such a low speed. After that I read something on another thread and my worries were laid to rest. Excellent feature that if wasn't there I would have surely damaged my car, but yes your right it was a big surprise to be jolted like that especially when I didn't know it would be working at that speed.

If your parking in a garage daily and it's sensitive to everything you do then I can see that's obviously a pain, I do think the range in which it reacts to an obstacle is quite close though ( acting as a last resort before hitting) like within 20cm or so? Does anyone know the distance it stops at?

I think it will react if you are going relatively fast for the distance you are at. If you go very slow, you can move closer.

Honestly it scared me first time it happened but I would rather take couple of nuisance brake situations than hitting a car behind me.

In my Ateca the “manouevring braking“ can be turned off. It’s a shock when the Brembos suddenly lock up as I approach a hedge!

I experienced it on Friday. I was swapping cars in the garage, so didn't bother to switch off smart assitants. Was reversing from the garage and there's bush branch sticking out, which I just push with the car and it goes to the side. Unfortunately, Formentor braked harshly on me. I will have to remember to switch off gadgets even for swapping cars at home.

Just wait until you go on your hols to somewhere like Cornwall or Devon and are heading down a picturesque narrow hedge-lined lane on the way to the beach. Inevitably you will need to reverse into a passing space when cars approach from the opposite direction. It's 'interesting' trying to reverse with all that foliage setting off your emergency braking 😂😂. I speak from experience with my previous Golf 😉

Also happened to me a couple times. A little bit of poo comes out each time as it’s quite violent.

Both times have been when reversing into a parking bay at my office, nothing around me whatsoever.

I can only but assume that given I’ve parked In the same space for 15 years and the manoeuvre is second nature, I must be doing it too fast and the car thinks I may hit the kerb

In theory, this car should be able to do light offroad, after all, it has Offroad Mode. But driving it through the fields is nightmare. I had to go very slow, to make sure, I don't hurt my neck. What's the point of pseudo 4x4 car that can't drive through high grass? I wonder if other VAG cars, like Touareg, suffer from the same sensitive emergency braking, while off tarmac.

I made a mistake of not being up to date with VAG tech.

We are unable to disable emergency braking?

Resurrecting an old thread but this has happened to me outside a bakery(!) - no hedge, no posts or people - the only suspect was a large leaf blowing in the wind!

Like others, thought I’d hit something - great feature when needed….as long as it works.

Also did it once when performing a 3-point turn, reversed and BANG breaks go on leaving me feel like I’ve been in a car crash.

🙄
