stuttery engine, then switches off!!

Hi there, My 1.8 16v Adl has stuterry revs and idles roughly, It then cuts off completely if I dont push the throttle. It usually does it when cold, however same thing happened yesterday and that was after 1 hour of driving and engine temp was around 72.

Anyways i have a diagnostic machine and when I put It though It came up with ENGINE KNOCK SENSOR??? I dont have a clue what this means. Altough I have heard about it.

Any help guys please..

There's no F in Quality..
Sounds like a similair problem I'm having to mine... just dies on me for no reason then restarts ok.

The Engine Knock Sensor, I think is also known as the 'Crank Position Sensor' (I may be wrong though) and it tells the ECU info about the camshaft etc.

Pricey to replace though I think :(

Hey andy, If you got same probs, I'd give the ISV a clean, then the throttle body then look at the coolant temp sensor.

However I havent done any, I am confused to where the ISV is, do you know??

They're all on my list of 'possible' causes !!! ;)

Going to spend Saturday morning 'investigating' !!

The ISV will be attached to the inlet manifold, and will have an air feed from your airbox. So find a pipe coming off your airbox, and follow it back to the engine, and you should find a 'cyclinder' that's plugged in to the inlet manifold, that's the ISV.

Thanks for the quick reply andy, I appreciate it.

My car also has other problems, after long driving say 100 miles, If I switch off the engine and try to start it again, I get no respnse, no noises it is completely dead. I then leave it for 1-3 hours come back and it starts no probs.

I have sure its not the battery, it leaves me to believe its the stater motor or alternator, Is there a way I can check which it is, with some sort of meter??

Thanks again guys.
