strange whirring noise?!?

hey guys im more than a little concerned i have a wierd noise coming from my 97 2.0 8v ibiza agg engine code, basically theres a loud whirring/whining noise coming from the engine bay, the noise gets louder and faster/higher with higher revs it does this stationary out of gear and on inspection the noise appeared to come from the pulley arrangement.

i have pulled all the inspection panelling off and have checked all the belts including the cam belt and all have good tension them and arent worn, i got under the car with the engine running and got close enough to pinpoint the noise better and it seems to be coming from around the large pulley at the bottom of the engine by the crank, the pulleys attached seem solid and not warped or anything though i havent actually taken all the pulleys off to check the bottom cam pulley for the cam belt, im pretty perplexed and was wondering if anyone had any ideas. id appreciate any help anyone can give me.

try it without alternator belt on

it sounds as tho it could be your water pump on its way out. but without hearing it myself i couldnt tell you for sure!

really? intriguing, how loud is it on yours? my is ridiculously loud i dont even like starting it now it worries me

i have a video i made today on my phone of the rev counter to show what it sounds like at what revs the sounds not great but it shud give u an idea anyone know anyway i let u guys see it?

It could also be the alternator bearings. Mine made a similar sort of sound when the bearings were knackered on it.

Could be your cam belt tensioner.

My old 8v Golf used to whine like a b****, couldn't be bothered to sort it, but it still went like a train!!

Waterpump or alternator, if its towards the bottom back of the engine then water pump. Alternators up front on the 8v so you should be able to tell

hi guys thanks for all the posts ive listened to the engine again and judging from that and what everyone has said on here i reckons its the waterpump so im gonna get a new one in her and ill let you know how it goes thanks again for all the help i really appreciate it.

If you want to check the alternator hold a screwdriver on it and if its the bearings the noise will transfer up the screwdriver.
