Ok had this exact same problem this time last year, went to start the car and it's turning over fine, just doesn't fire....

Last year I was sat at a petrol station after having driven it for the first time in 2 weeks from my mates house, filled up went to start it and was just turning over.cleaned the spark plugs to see if it would help and nothing.Eventually it started by itself after trying for about 2 hours!

Same thing has happened now, luckily though I'm on my driveway and have just pushed it into the garage.Only drove it a day ago and it was fine then so baffled as to why its not starting now!

Any ideas people?!

cheers

Coil, fuel pump (or relay), battery?

Depends what you're getting spark and fuel wise although i had a coil go with the same symptons and i still had a little pissy spark

defo sounds like the coil if its not sparking on any of the plugs, anyone with another Mk2 close that you could borrow the coil off? They're about £40 new, need only a spanner to change and takes about 5 mins (assuming you dont drop the rather irritatingly uncaptive bolt down the back)

GSF/ECP should have em in stock, and i could be wrong but i believe its just a coil in the mk2 (one coil that fires for all the plugs) and they had coil packs (one coil pack for each plug) in the Mk3 onwards.

could be the coil, but there are a few things to check.

Check the distributor cap first, its succeptible to heat from the engine and can crack. Pop it off and gently squeeze it and look for cracks inside and out, also check that the four points are clean and not broken, and that the carbon rod on the inside centre is smooth and unbroken. Any problems listed could cause issues.

The coil, if its shorting or gone look for cracks or small white marks, or scoring. also at night time you could try firing the car up and looking for arcing on the inside.
