Splashback when filling with fuel causing pump to stop

Morning all!

This is very very strange, the last few times i have filled up, i have had big problems with the pumps clicking and stopping. I have owned the car for 2 years and never had this issue before.

Its like there is something causing it to splash back and hit the nozel.

Also, once i finally get it going without stopping, it makes a strange wooshing noise that it never made before where the fuel sounds like its bouncing off something inside.

Im going to experiement by going to a different filling station next time, but the current one i use i have never had an issue with before and they dont appear to have changed the pumps.

Has anyone ever experienced anything like this? Its getting very annoying!

I had a similar problem on my first car could only put one or two litres in at a time before the pump would cut out. Annoying to say the least!

Turned out when I had my MOT that the fuel filler pipe running to the tank had worked its way loose from the back of the filler cap  so that might be worth checking?

I will have a look! Not entierly sure how i get to the back of there though!

I guess it would seem loose on the inside too?

Wouldn't know myself sorry, my first car was a corsa so could be a completly different set up.

When it happened to me, there was nothing visible wrong with the actual filler cap.

Service and MOT are due in June so i might just have to live with it till then if nothing obvious presents itself.

Cant be arsed taking it in and have to scrounge a lift to work :p

Mine has been like it from the first time I filled it up 8 years ago. Some pumps just don't work. I usually get my fuel from the same filling station which works with my car. If a pump blows back it is sometimes worth turning the nozzle round to different angles. I don't know why yours should suddenly start playing up though.

i had the same problem last time I was filling up, I assumed it was just the crappy tesco pump! :(

when i was coming to the end of filling it, it kept clicking off, and on again. Then it felt like it was full, so i just decided to pull it out of the tank, I noticed that some petrol was sitting in the sill. not a huge amount, but more than the normal little splash you get when you pull it out.
