Just had a call from my garage to say that they have fitted a new speedo sensor to my car and that it has not fixed my speedo problem. They said that I will definately need a new Dash display unit and are 100% certain that this will fix the problem. I can understand where they are coming from as my car overheated a few months back and I didnt get any warning lights or anything and now the speedo isnt working.

Trouble is a new one is something like £180, the one seat have in stock has been on back order for 8 weeks and I will then have to pay for the garage to fit it and code it. I could almost cry !!

How can something like this break ? I havent hit anything, I havent hit the dash - I rarely headbutt it these days as I have found the joy of primative measures such as hand signals and swearing ! My friend (who previously owned the car) and I have never removed the dash console ? Im completely flumoxed !!

Oh poo - why couldn't it have gone at the beginning of last year, I'd have grabbed the dash out of my donor!

I guess its like anything, sometimes they wear out? But ask them if they have had VAG-com on it - theres a test it runs which lights up all your warning lights and spins all the dials. If the dash was broken I assume none of that would happen...

I will go and get the numbers out of the dash shortly. Motors in motion have loads and they would charge me £75 and £5 shipping. The garage say they can try it but, they arent sure if it will work - they arent exactly brimming with hope. Bit of a pricey risk when I still have to pay £45 for them to fit it and re-programme it too. MOT's around here are approx £55 - thats due in February and then my car tax is due at the end of this month. Im supposed to be saving money for my trip to Venice.

Ha ha ha !!! Much easier said than done. Seems a certain steering wheel is in the way - blasted thing. I mean, who would've thought I might need one of those ?? Got the 2 star shaped screws out of the top and there are a further 2 either side of the steering wheel just inside the housing. Rubbish !!!

even if you use ETKA to get the part numbers and compair it to the part number for hte clocks for the rest of the mk1 range as im sure this one thats breaking was a 1litre as it had 239 brakes on it

Im just going to take it to a different garage to get an MOT done and go from there. Suprisingly enough the speedo isnt something they apparently check on an MOT - what do you pay £50 for ?? !!! you learn something new everyday.

Someone is breaking one in Manchester they have the cluster for £40 and £10 postage and packing, which seems more than reasonable  Should be a straight forward swap and re-programme shouldnt it ?

you could swap it yourself as long as you dont mind being towed into the dealers to get your central locking reprogrammed  also get them to clock them so that it shows the cars proper milage

Im confused  Phoned around quite a few garages today to ask them about changing the cluster over. Some mixed reactions and quite a few groans ! I then phoned Seat who said that the clusters are easy to change over but, the clocks cannot be adjusted or changed. So I assume if I buy a used cluster (how wrong does that sound) I will end up with the previous cars mileage which is as we all know horribly illegal. Looks like I will end up having to fork out for a new unit

I am sure that on the mk1 arosa, the immobiliser has a seperate e.c.u, it is not built into the dash like the later ones, so you should just be able to put another cluster straight in and off you go.
Have the garage checked all the wiring between the sensor and dash? it is very rare the earlier dash's give problems.
Jochen.

all digital dashes can be clocked , its just that SEAT wont do it , its illegal to clock a car and not say but if your clocking a car due to a clock change and your not changing the cars actual milage then theres nothing wrong with it and its legal

its only if you clock a cars dials and not tell the next buyer then its illegal
