Spark plugs on 1.4tsi FR, Misfiring issue

Hi All,

The car has been fine, no real problems since I purchased it but over the last couple of days I've noticed a misfire / hesitation when accelerating in 3rd or 4th. I haven't had VCDS on it to check it yet. The car is a 2011 1.4tsi FR with CAXC engine. Low miles at 23000 but as far as I can see from the service book, the plugs have not been changed. I've had a good trawl through the posts and see that misfiring is an issue and that changing the plugs can help. My question is, what plugs should I be looking to get and what gap should they be? Eurocarparts says the plugs that suit are NGK PZFR6R (5758). Any help from someone who knows would be much appreciated.

Cheers, James

There have been lots of issues with plugs on these engines, for a while they where on back order, personally i'd pay the extra and get genuine. but make sure they aren't old stock & subject to the recent recall on "stocked" plugs at the dealer

After a bit of research, it turns out that the SEAT supplied plugs are the same as the NGK PZFR6R that you can get from Eurocarparts for about 2/3rds of the price of the dealer. I changed them over this morning. To make life easier, I got a coil pack puller from AwesomeGTI. Well worth the cash spent since there wasn't a lot of room to work in.
The old plugs have only done 23000 but most of my journeys are local stop start stuff. The condition of the plugs didn't suggest any issues with the engine.
Anyway, new plugs are in and I've took it out for a test drive and 'touch wood' my misfire / kangarooing under acceleration seems to have gone. Have ran through a bottle of Cataclean and will fill up next time with branded fuel instead of whatever Supermarket has the best deal on.

Here's hoping everything is sorted now...

Cheers for the help and advice.

We also have a 2010 1.4 tsi 25000 miles which also suffered a slight hesitation in 3rd and 4th under load. I put this down to bad fuel after having filled the tank full with morrisons unleaded whilst on holiday. Back using normal shell unleaded and so far (touch wood) its been ok.

Hi there,

Sorry I haven't been on for a few weeks. I got my plugs from Euro Car Parts. They will most probably have them in stock. Order and pay online and collect in store for a better price. I had trouble pulling the coil packs. They can be removed with a couple of cable ties but I opted to get a coil pack puller from Awesome GTI. It was £11, well worth the cash for the proper tool for the job. I was a bit sceptical but my misfire disappeared after I fitted the new plugs even though the old/original plugs looked perfectly ok. On another note, I had been running on Asda unleaded. I've filled up this time at my local Jet garage to see if this will improve my mpg. It only cost a quid more to fill up against my local Asda.
