If anyone else is in the same boat, in the end I got a used 125/70/R18 space saver (the rim is stamped 1K0601027AP) off eBay for £60 and a new foam insert with the jack etc from Deutscheparts (5F0071716) for £60 also on eBay. I went for the 18 inch wheel and tyre because it has pretty much the same overall diameter as my 17 inch alloys with 225/45/R17 tyres. I chose a secondhand space saver with an unused Continental tyre on it rather than a LingLong or whatever it’s called in the hope that it might last longer. The foam insert etc comes with two of the plastic poppers to secure the insert to the boot floor, and the big plastic bolt to secure the wheel.
It all fits in the boot floor fine, except none of the gubbins that I kept there previously (snow socks, puncture plug kit etc) now quite fits in the wheel well
