I thought i would post my solution for using an iPhone with the standard factory dock. Those who have tried this will note that the door will not shut when an iPhone, or iPod Touch for that matter, is inserted into the dock. An easy solution for this is to remove the door (it has a similar mechanism to a toilet roll holder, one of the pegs slides in slightly, allowing the door to be pulled off.
This however does not make up for the cr@pness of the standard dock. I had tried setting up playlists 1-6 to no avail, and started thinking about getting a standard AUX socket and disconnecting the dock. Another thing which annoyed me was the fact that the dock did not charge my iPhone 3G, and when playing music combined with the bluetooth handsfree, my battery wasn't lasting too well.
My first part of my setup/solution is this. This allows you to have your iPhone out from under your seat which is easier, and allows you to keep the little door on making things look tidier! To solve the charging issues I needed one of these. This does what it says on the tin, and enables the factory dock to charge your iPhone/iTouch and all new iPods too.
This is easy to set up, simply plug the cable into the factory dock as shown below:
I then routed the cable through the gap between the door and the seat:
This part is now personal preference and what you want to do. The cable is now there for you to put your iPod wherever you want. I noticed the centre armrest has a small cutout on the side so the cable can be routed in there if you want to keep your ipod hidden. I wanted mine up on the dash, so i purchased the relevant brodit connectors/holder:
You will notice that the charge converter is plugged in before the brodit connector. I experimented with plugging the charge connector in first but whilst it still charged my phone, audio came from the phones speaker instead of the cars.
I simply routed the cable behind the plastic trim on the centre console to neaten things up a bit:
There is one last thing you will need to do to overcome the pathetic playback capabilities of the standard dock. This requires that you have a jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch. If you plugin a non-jailbroken phone/iPod you will get this:
This sucks as you cannot change tracks or select playlists. So you have to install a piece of software from Cydia (the unofficial app store for jailbroken iphones). It is called NoAccessorySplash. It means that you then get this:
As you can see, my phone is charging, and i can change/select tracks!! There is one problem which i still haven't been able to work around. The stock headunit constantly tells the iphone to play. You can pause it but within 2 seconds it will play automatically again. This means you cannot play audio from other apps. Most satnavs do not work properly because of this. The voice prompts get cut off, Navigon still works as it plays the prompts over the audio and Navmi also works (i use Navmi its great value for money and works really well. Looks good too). One thing you can do is move your iPod library temporarily, some software, again from Cydia, allows you to do this. SwapTunes is the name of that application. I have had some success with this, but sometimes the head unit decided there isn't any iPod and reverts to radio, sometimes it will play cricket.
Hopefully the above helps some of you guys out. My apologies for the dirty car too, i had just returned from Scotland.
