Thanks Simon,
Have you any details as to how / where i can source and fit this oil catch can? Is it a relatively easy job?

See photos below and make up your own mind about the IC :)

and here is the alternator out of the car.. well and truly broken..
As it stands, if i turn the pulley wheel manually, the alternator doesn't spin... and if it does it will only do about 1 revolution in 10...

What would you recommend with the IC? Replace the pipes? i think its going to be quite hard to work in the entrance / exit of the IC without taking the bumper off... But i will give it a try.... Once side seems to be "leaking" allot more than the other...

afaik the FMIC is sandwiched between the Radiator and possibly the Oil cooler I think. what side do you think the oil is coming from? the pipeworks for the BKD engine are crap since the clips that hold the hoses in place and just that. clips..

as to the catch can they cna be sourced from various places. ebay. or some motorsport places.

here are some guides though maybe now the BKD engine but yui'll see what to do.

if you can source a supplier for the "Mann & Hummel Pro Vent" one, all the better, this is a OEM look alike oil catch can. they cna be expensive though and hard to obtain from a good supplier.

though any one should do. googies on here fitted one to his Toledo. he said it could quite a bit of oil at our last meet at the weekend.

I will be looking to do this sometime this year.

Cheers Again Simon!

Good set of links for the oil catch cans! Will have to look in that...
I guess with the intercooler pipes its just a case of remove the clips & pipes... see what the damage is (get some more pics) then just take it from there...

I suppose it could be something as simple as the pipes have popped off slightly.
But it is both sides which are "leaking" and i suppose if the IC is sandwiched with the radiator etc etc then there is a possibility it could be the water pipes going into the radiator... More investigation needed!

chris - the oil is from the crankcase breather - it dumps oil and vapour into you air inlet pipes, this then collects in the lowest part of the system ie the pipe you show at the intercooler. The pipe clip/connection is a very bad VAG design which affects all the PD turbos. The lugs which locate the pipe and clip secures wear down (soft ally) so the seals wear very quickly and oil seeps out. Its worse on mapped engines due the higher sustained boosts, often the pipe blows off.
This could be the cause of your smoke since an intermittantly leaking boost pipe will play havoc with the fuelling/air metering. New pipes are not cheap. various diy alternatives are possible to improve on pipe clamping. I don't think there is a 3rd party silicone hose set for the BKD engine yet.

ok, thanks for the response...

I have been reading a few scary posts this morning and i am getting sluightly worried.

Apparently allot of oil making it to the IC and leaking via the pipes at the bottom is a huge sign that the turbo is on its way out due to a seal going on it.
I have read that its normal for the BKD engine to pop IC pipes but no mention of the amount of oil which mine is surrounded by....

Thoughts?

Chris,

This is the problem i have been having, pipe replaced under warranty, new clips, eventually used some rubber sealing strips and jubilee clips to hold pipe in place with PTFE tape. should stop the oil coming out and loss of pressure.

This is what i did to the car, cleared intercooler out and added catch can in.

Cleaning intercooler

Pretty straight forward, just start taking bumper off and you'll see what needs done. Intercooler is between AC rad and Coolant Rad.
