Smoke from under heatshield

Another problem added to the smoke

just wondering is there anything under the heatshield that can cause smoke, as just from yesterday there was smoke coming from under it once the engine is hot. not huge clouds of it, but enough to notice it, and there's a smell of burning. dont know what it could be, and the bolts have siezed on the heatshield

also, my heat wrap has come off, is this a major problem, cos since that came off the smoke started :S

anyone got any pics of the exhaust manifold without the heatshield?

I'd get it checked out if it's the heatshield on the downpipe from the manifold. I've seen vids of a Golf who removed the headshield there and the car caught fire...

I take its probably the cat heatshield. If so, chances are something got stuck in between the metal heatshield and exhaust/cat, acting like a giant toaster on whatever is stuck in between. Maybe its a bit of rubbish, maybe its some grass. Just have a look and possibly even remove the heatshield completely. (thats what I've done and I've never had a problem )

are there 2 heatshields then? cos theres one on the manifold and i had a sports cat fitted, wheres the heatshield for that?

If you had a sports cat fitted then you probable wont have the normal rattly cat heatshield.

nah i dont, how many bolts hold the exhaust heatshield on? theres 4 on the block and then 1 on the pipe?

Yup 2 as standard, one on the manifold, one over the cat, which normally gets chopped off and left off. I've had the one on the manifold wealded a couple of times, but always comes loose again. It only rattles when pulling away from cold, after a couple of minutes I don't hear it as the mental has expanded due to everything getting hot, and is silent after that.

if it's the manifold one on the front of the engine, I'd be inclined to say that you've got a cracked exhaust manifold that's leaking exhaust gases......

what engine is yours?

the heat wrap was probably preventing the gases from escaping from the manifold....

gay i dont wanna have to buy a new exhaust manifold, roughly how much are they?

and now the car ran at 140degrees on the way home, and was getting hotter, reckon i'm losing coolant somewhere? also why would that make my manifold area smoke?

well if you have coolant dripping onto a hot manifold, it will make smoke

didnt think there were any pipes near the heatshield, there arent as far as i can see

You havent got a leaking head dripping oil onto it have you?

it wasnt the head gasket (phew) its was a leaking rad, and the froth was because there was no air water in the system

not as expensive as i thought lol
