Smoke from behind steering wheel? HELP?!

Hi guys, so today when I got home I was messing with the main beam and seeing how bright they were (no reason in particular just was doing it out of boredom and interest) and then after turning the main beam on and off probably about 5 times I noticed that it wasn't going off, I tried pulling the leaver back multiple times and it just wouldn't turn the main beam off (the blue light stayed on constantly no matter what I did) so I walked out the front to go see if they were actually on and they were, when I went back into the car I could smell smoke, I then noticed there was a bit a white smoke just floating out of the whole where the indicator stalk joins the steering wheel?

I've took it all apart and I can't find anything? All the fuses are good and I don't know exactly where the smoke would have been coming from?

I had to disconnect the battery in order to stop the smoke, I've since reconnected it all and there isn't any smoke but I now can't flash the full beam at all? But I can have full beam if my headlights are on at the same time.

If anyone has any ideas of what to check or what to do then please let me know, also has anyone else ever heard of this problem or had it them selves?

Thanks in advance for any replies, I'm really stuck on what to do.

Also it's a 2001 seat ibiza chill S 1.4mpi

Thanks

Just to add, I now have the EPC light on constantly, I also still don't have any main beam unless my headlights are already on.

Any suggestions?

If I plug a Volkswagen diagnostics took in will that tell me what the problem is?

I have had a similar experience also. Still got an intermintent EPC fault would like to know what fault codes you dig up.
when my EPC light is on i have to press the brake pedal hard 2-3 times and the light goes of for a while.
I have a spare break light switch. hope it will help.

Any info would be greatfull been runing on this fault for 6 months
and also a P0420 fault i have the device to clear it it just doesnt read anything other than engine faults. so will need to invest in a better reader.

It will be the indicator stalk itself i had this problem and it stopped my indicators working and there was smoke coming from behind the steering wheel. Try replacing the stalk.
