Slow speed fan problem - Guide to fixing

Great stuff, next Saturday sorted then!

Ok so a few Saturdays after I intended to do the slow speed fan fix I admit, but I have a couple of questions. Iv attempted the fix just, turned the engine on, A/C on, no slow speed fans still. Just the usual high speed pulsating every now and then. Is there something iv missed? Iv done it as per the instructions, cut the red/white and splice ONLY the red/black. Iv used the resistors from farnell as per the order number, some silverline solder (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100g-Sold...Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item20d82d03c8)
and still seems to be the same as before. anything else I need to check?
I will mention the car never over heats, and the A/C despite the slow speed fans not working, still comes out cold.
Its a cupra only Y-reg model.

Are you sure you connected the red/white wire to the correct wire? As in the correct half since you have cut it.

Needs to be connected to the half that goes to the car and not into the fan.

As mentioned above double check your wiring with diagram posted. The resistors connect onto the red and white cable that travel away from the fan and into a plug. This caught me out at first.

Balls, iv basically done it all the fan side of the connector. Iv done nothing the side of the connector which goes to the rest of the vehicle loom.
This is wrong then?

lol I wasn't expecting much from myself, its the first time Iv dabbled with wiring and electrics. So re wire the wires iv cut, and do it the vehicle loom side of the plug, is that what your saying?

Out of curiosity, anybody know why doing it the wrong side of the connector doesn't have the desired effect?

You can do it on the other side of the connector providing you have connected to the wire going to the loom rather than the cut piece that goes to the fan.

Double check you haven't connected it to the cut piece of wire that's still connected to the fan.

All sorted, it was the red/white wire I did wrong. Slow speed working nicely now, cheers chaps

fair play, Its easily done. I made the same mistake but spotted it whilst still under the car.

Hi guys I need your help desperatly, my fans only kick in when temp goes slightly above half way mark (both of them really load) I gathered it was the resistors gone when didn't kick in the low speed fan!- so I got a new fan control unit fitted from vw specialist-lion garage leicester! ( old showed water damage) This hasn't sorted my issue out- they said I might need new fans??????!!!! Is this true and how much are these!!! I have had the green temp sensor replaced to! I also noticed when on motor way and booting it the temp came down to quarter mark, when eased off it rose up!
Urgent reply please as I don't want to stress the water impaller and cause it to fail!! Also going on a long trip in a few weeks don't want anything going wrong!!!

You will need to carry out the resistor mod or replace the fans, The fan control unit is a seperate part and not what you needed.

New fans are around £400,

The fact your temp is dropping to 1/4 whilst moving suggests your thermostat is stuck open so it would be a good idea to replace this as well.

Do your fans come on with the aircon turn't on?

From what you say above it seems the slow speed isn't working but the high speed is.
If thats the case then the resistor mod will fix the fault.
I recently done mine.

Thermostat is around £15 fro a genuine one or £7 for a circoli one from ECP,
I have used Circoli with no issues but other have.

Resistor mod needed then,
You can try to bridge the plug and check that the low speed actually comes on but I'm sure it will be the resistors.

I'm in North London.

Changing the fans will solve it yes, Apparently you can buy fans from ECP or GSF but they are still around £200.

Best way is resistor mod.

What's the total cost of the resistor mod and how difficult is it!? I'm more towards getting new fans as the garage did mention this and said around £200 mark for new fans! Its just I don't have the time to do it!
