Slight Whirring Noise From Alternator Area

Hi there,

I've had a slight whirring/wheezing noise coming from under the bonnet for a while now. I thought initially it was the alternator bearings (the alternator is still working fine).

I've just had a look under the bonnet with the engine idling and could see that the tensioner was moving slightly left to right. Is it supposed to do this? Could the noise be coming from that, rather than the alternator?

It's difficult to pinpoint where the wheezing is actually coming from, because the diesel rattle is so bloody loud.

Thanks,

Craig

I've also started to notice there is occasionally a judder when the steering wheel is on full lock - I wonder if this is connected?

Could anyone who has a 1.9 TDI engine have a quick look at their alternator and tensioner and let me know if their tensioner 'shakes' or wobbles slightly?

Ta,

Craig

Thanks for the reply. There's a definite irregular 'shake' to the tensioner. I tighten it up as you say.

I've got a feeling that I'l be getting a new tensioner. Cheaper than an alternator.
