I've recently got a Ibiza Cupra R. Everything is great apart from there is a slight knock in the steering colum
Not really had a good look yet but got down and had a bit of a look/listen and it seems to be somewhere not far from the steering wheel.
It's fine while rolling apart from slowly over small bumps, but at a stand still just rock the wheel a tiny bit and something knocks???????

Anyone had this before or know any other threads about simlar problems.
Thought I'd ask you lot before I go taking it to bits...

Other than that and the paint chipping off at the meer sight of a stone :( its a nice car...........

yep paint is a common problem! especially if you have a red one! :(

As for the steering wheel, i get a slight knock when turning past centre either way, and i also have a squeaking/grinding noise when i turn the wheel!

is the knock loud? or only when your listening ? :)

 welcome to the forum!

The knocking is usually caused by the top bearing on the column. IIRC it all comes complete with the indicator and wiper stalks as one unit. You need to remove the airbag, the steering wheel. The tricky bit can be removing the upper column collar, this has a spring behind it and needs to be removed before the stalk assy can be lifted off. There is a specail puller to do this so you dont damage the column or collar.

Hey guess what it is a red 1..........

Nah its not a very big knock at all, its just bugging me. I've literally had the car a week and it started doing it yesterday....
Its done less than 20k miles and just supprised that it is knocking. Its gota be the first car I've ever had thats had less than 100k miles and I've never had knocking in the steering colum (and most of the cars I've owned werre french so you kinda expect it to :) )

Think I'll be taking it to bits before long then to find out what it is......

Anyone know how to get past the airbag and get the steering wheel off???

iirc there are screws behind the steering wheel, but you need to remove battery for at least 10 mins so there is no charge left in the air bag system.

mine is on 24k and knocks slightly, so dont worry :)

lots of niggly little bits, but the overall build quality is far superior to the french cars. and the performance :)

Thanks alot chaps.
Might leave it for the time being, but I don't think it'll be long before it annoys me enough to get it sorted..
Is this a common prob then and what other common probs are there????

Did you ever get round to sorting the knock, if so what needed doing? I've had my Cupra 2 days now and a few hour's ago it's developed a steering column knock which is 100% identicle to your sympton's! I'm the same as your I want to go and strip it down now at 1am to see what it is, but don't want to jump inn and screw up the airbag/stalk spring!

Hi ya..
I still not got round to doing to be honest. Although I think over the past week or so it has got a bit worse so I'm gonna have to sort it out very shortly.
I do have a warrenty on my car so I might use that, Bit reluctant to use it because I don't trust most spanner wielding to touch my cars but I just haven't the time. Work till 6.30 6 days a week and I have to fit everything else into a sunday so unfortuanetly the poor little biza has been a bit neglected.
Will get round to it shortly though because its seriously doing my head in.........
