Shock absorbers

Dear all,

I did use the search function but couldn't find anything so I'm posting this as a new thread. Apologies if this a duplicate.

Seat Leon MK3, 63 reg, 1.6 TDI, <30K on the clock.

I bought the car in 2015 from a used cars place. They carried out a service before selling and I can see from the invoice that both rear shock absorbers were replaced as they were leaking oil. Car had 10021 miles on the clock then.

A year on the car has just failed its first MOT, with the front shock absorber leaking oil.

What stinks in particular is that I have extended AA warranty on the car. When I spoke to them they initially said they'd cover, but then called back later to say they wouldn't as I still have 7 days of manufacturer's warranty on the car. Fair enough - it's stated clearly in the policy so I called Seat Customer Services, who told me that they can't do anything as the car is at an independent garage, not a dealership.

So it looks like the £150+ bill will be mine to settle, plus whatever the partial retest fee is. Not something I would have expected on a car's first MOT.

My questions are:

- with two shock absorbers having gone bad in such a short time frame, are they known weak points on the cars!? Or am I just really unlucky?

- is there anything in particular that causes shocks to go bad and leak oil. It clearly isn't mileage, we don't live along a farm track etc. etc.?

Many thanks for any insight

Martin

I would have made a point of getting the car taken to a Seat garage. Its clearly not right and should be fixed no questions asked under the manufacturer warranty. Anyway I'm sorry you've had this problem, hopefully it won't return.

I've had no similar problems yet with my 64 plate although it does make strange clunking noises occasionally when maneuvering at low speed and turning the wheels.
