rusty rear arches AGAIN

when i first got my gti i noticed the back arches had some surface rust underneath on the lip,well.. i took it to a body shop to get sorted but they musnt have done it right because when i checked today its bubbling underneath the paint[:@] so looks like the rust is comin through again..anyone got anygood ideas to get rid on the rust altogether? i was thinking maybe grind the lip right off and get them resprayed or have new arches put on?
i just wanna catch it before it spreads..

My Bengal yellow 16v Cupra is the same. Bl**dy tinworm - looks like a Rover Metro! Replacement arches is the only thing I've seen cure this permanently. :cry:

Once rust has formed anywhere on the paintwork, it will ALWAYS be there no matter how good or expensive the re-spray is.

My current mk2 has a rusty rear arch, where i had it done twice in 2 years by a garage called Solus or something who do Porches.

Now, matey at this garage suggested to sand down the rust, put on layer of filler, sand the filler and spray on the filler. This is not a permanent fix, as said above rust will always be there once formed. The filler will delay the rust coming through to the paint work

Hows that?

Sounds like a total bodge!

Grind away all the rust, treat with a rust inhibitor like naval jelly, repair arch with new metal welded on (if needed), smooth and paint. Do this and the rust won't come back any faster than it'd appear on a new car

my Mk 2 has rusty arches too.... but its awaiting the skirts being fitted, so i'll leave that job for a nice , dry , day!.. always so much to do to it......... but its begining to 'look ' better...

its worse on metallics as the metallic flakes in the paint help it along. Both my ibiza's have been flat coloured, the white one was getting bad when i sold her, but the GTi doesnt have a single spot of rust anywhere :D :D

I keep my eye on the arches and the second there is the slightest chip i am there with the paint!

Pish.

Obviously, if you just spray over rust, then yes, the rust will remain and continue doing it's thing. If you do the job properly, prepare the surfaces well and get paint on before you start getting any flash rusting, there shouldn't be a problem. The issue with arches is that generally the metal is fairly thin and the inner lip is usually a dirt trap, so the rust often starts from the rear of the panel. If there were more metal to play with, then you could go to town with the grinder and bring it back to good metal, but that's not normally an optio nwhere arches are concerned. The usual answer is to cut the rusted metal out and weld in a new arch section. Grind the welds back, smooth with a skim of filler (or lead load if you're feeling posh) and then repaint.

Ok Then

Lets all get our arches redone (properly) and see how long it takes for the rust to back.
I can garantee the rust will eventually come through again no matter how good the re-spray is or anything you do to stop it.

Since having my rear arches coated with liquid lead, and sprayed - NO RUST, but this comes at a cost. (i done it myself at work and trust me it works)
Basically, the rusty part of panel gets chopped off and new part made by really hot lead in the form of liquid and once dry it is sanded over and over to get the shape of the panel.
OR
Get a new skin from Euro car parts, but means it will never ever line up properly.

Hows that!!!

I was only saying...

FWIW the arches on my car, a 99 V plate, seem solid enough, nothing bubbling through last time I checked. And yes, to whoever commented that metallics are more prone to rusting, it's a metallic. On the rare occasions that I wash it, I do get my fingers round all the mud traps in the arches and remove any mud, leaves, whatever I find lurking - this is surely the best rust prevention method (and probably also the cheapest) there is.

And while i'm on about it, owning an Italian car from the 70's, I know more than just a little bit about rust... :cry:
 
Alfa by any chance??

Its only my passenger side arch thats bad.....i think the previous owner had a bump and left it a bit before getting it sorted.

It need sorted again now, even if its just cosmetically fixed as mines only a 1.0mpi

Off topic, but intersting that you just assumed it was an Alfa - I really don't know why Alfa Romeo has never been able to shake this reputation for making rot boxes. Sure, they were bad in the 70's, but so were all the other Italian manufacturers - because they were all using the same cheaply bought poor quality Russian steel, but for some reason no-one seems to tar the other manufacturers with the same brush. Go figure...
